Well, it's all about perception. Eye of the beholder. Whether or not they are geeky is entirely down to what you - whoever you is - thinks.

There is no de facto yes or no answer.

I mean, some kid may view PC gaming as geeky, but some other kid may view console gaming as stupid and mainstream and shallow and boring and trivial and derivitive, but I digress.

(consoles suck)

I think the best way to change anyone's opinion is with cold, hard logic. What's the kryptonite of geekdom? Sex, of course. So argue the pornography angle as much as you can. Porn, porn, porn. I've never seen an argument that wasn't won with porn. Just keep on arguing about porn. You can be as one note as you like, hell, you can just repeatedly say the word porn. It's an argument winner.

It's like paper scissors stone - sex trumps geek every time. Actually, it's like paper scissors nuke. Sex trumps everything.

Sings the Pornish national anthem

Or, if for some bizzare reason, that doesn't work, argue that PC games are sexier because they look better.

Still, most console fanboys are of the opinion that console games are better looking than PC games, so maybe it's just easier to cut your losses and just ignore them.

I think there are a few differences that may lead people to believe PC gamers are more geeky. The first is that console games often have multiple controls for the same system. In otherwords, if you want to play a multiplayer PC game, you need to have multiple PC's. Therefore, you're more likely to be playing alone than with friends. The second thing is the controler itself. You can get a more manly grip on a console controler than you can on a typical mouse or keyboard.

Having said that, both of those really don't make PC gamers any more geeky than console gamers. If you sit in front of any game for 8-16 hours a day without going outside or getting some sort of physical exorcise, you ARE a geek, I don't care what game you're playing. Finally, I take pride in my geek title, even though I do get plenty of exorcise, and can bench press more than my body weight. If you're going to do anything, do it to the fullest! GEEK PRIDE!

Motivational speeking for gamers anyone?8)

I dont care what some console fanboy KID ( i must say this again so here it is K I D ) thinks

PC gaming = PRO gaming.

Console = no skill, dumbed down for "CASUAL" players and i dont care about casuals

Everyone was casual at some point of time, but if you are true gamer, you becaome PRO sooner or later.

And only PC offers you PRO experience

Video games in general are considered "geeky", Pc or otherwise, so these friends of yours are just projecting...
Playing Halo 3 is as "geeky" as playing Crysis. playing "Saint's row" is geeker than playing, well, just about anything...

But remember, being a geek is not a flaw. The geeks of today are the millionares of tomorrow!

1. Not every multiplayer game need you to play on seperate pcs.And even if it does, you are still playing MULTIPLAYER so that means that you are playing with other people. You are just not in same room, except if you play in Internet/gaming center

2.You are gaming not doing exercise. And grip depends on gamepad, for example,ps3's gamepad sucks, while x360 one is bether, but anyway you can have both of them pluged in your pc.

And all in all, what methers in GAMES is speeeeeed. You need to do things as fast as possible. When you see someone in lets say FPS game, you want to shoot him as fast as possible, befor he notices you.

Gamepad= slows you down.No mether how good you are with gamepad, you will not be as fast and accurate as with pro gaming /or regular mouse.

When you also want to make shortcuts for some actions (most console players dont even know what im talking about) than you neeeed absolutely need keyboard.

this way i/other pc gamers can ALMOST INSTANTLY play and chat without suffering gameplay

I wouldn't agree with that. Console gaming has been mainstream and even pretty cool ever since the first PlayStation, thanks to games like Wipeout.

I'd say there is a culture of cool surrounding consoles, especially now the visuals are really starting to get to a pretty good state, and games like GTA4 are taking it to new heights.

I mean, let's face facts - geeks are only geeks because they're marginalised. You don't label the majority - it's only a cult while it's unpopular, then it's a religion.

GTA4 is going to make more money than most movies could even dream of. Include it in the highest grossing movies list of all time, and it'll probably be around #23 after 12 months.

I find it pretty hard to consider that alternative.

Well, if 'geek' means a smart, intelligent and intellectually advanced human being, then i'm all for it. I mean who wants to be some 'jock' with the size of your brain smaller than your d***? I'd rather be a PC geek than a no-talent console lazyass.

Eh, it pretty much means you are a bit more geeky because in order to play pc games you have to know that they will run on your computer. So, at the very least, you have to have some prior knowledge about computers. And you must be able to operate an installer (press "next" like 6 times). Then if something goes wrong with the game, you have to know how to troubleshoot. If your video card bursts into flames, you have to figure out why. If your console bursts into flames, you mail the melted pieces back to the company and they fix it for you.

These are the things console gamers don't need to think or worry about because when you get a game for the console, it's supposed to work right outta the box with no issues, and generally that is the case.

Yeah, I call it rock paper scissors most of the time anyway, just to make it easier for most people, but every now and then I just like to be British.

Also I get mixed up and call it rock paper stone, which just confuses everyone.

But if cool is defined as being something with massmarket mainstream appeal, then Oblivion is arguably one of the coolest games ever released on PC.

no, in absolute terms, pc games are cool. anyone who thinks otherwise is but blind and and does not see the truth. and same goes for oblivion - in absolute terms, oblivion is not cool.

unfortunately, only geeks seem attracted to pc games. perhaps in absolute terms, geeks are actually cool. but i wouldn't bet on it.

but seriously, let's say you're on a first date with someone you find really attractive. if she asks you, 'what are some of your hobbies?', would you dare tell her 'i like to play pc games and post on pc games forums.' probably not, right? that's more like a 3rd or 4th date kind of revelation, isn't it?

Disagreed. Oblivion is way cool.

And yeah, on a first date, I'd be like, "yeah, I play 50 hours of WoW every week". I don't do much else. I never go out. The only reason we're on this date is because the WoW servers are down."

It's called Stein Saks Papir over here. Which is stone scissors paper. It's the whole 2,5 and 2.5 discussion all over again...

TC, whether you're a geek or not depends on multiple factors. Playing a PC-game from time to time does not make you a nerd, typing in forums all day sure as hell gets you closer to that title. Heeey....

Think I'll have to go through a "de-nerdifying process" this summer.

Other things that make you more nerd than you need to be.

1. Typing "pr0n" and think it's witty.

2. Understanding wtf "roxors" actually means.

3. Not changing your underwear because that would make you stop levelling up.

4. Sitting at home every damn saturday playing games, thinking that it's the cute cheerleader's loss that you're not at that party. Sure it is.

5. You feel passionate enough about PC/console-gaming to consider it PRO, when you've actually not been in a tournament... ever. Any pro-movie watchers out there, huh? You know with special popcorn that makes you aim at your mouth faster.

(consoles rule)

(This is so mod-material)

I can think of a couple reasons one might think so.

1) The solitary nature of sitting at the desk in front of the PC as opposed to lounging on the couch, bed or whatever in front of the tv, occasionally with friends. (Not including LAN parties, in which case PC gaming is every bit as social as console gaming).

2) PC gamers are probably more likely to have some computer knowledge. How many PC gamers build their PCs, while consoles only have to be pulled out of the box and plugged in.

Frankly, I find the comparison amusing, though. Outside of the gaming world, gaming itself is usually seen as geeky. I'm reminded of a friend who used to poke fun at me for being a sci fi geek, while this person was really into anime and went to conventions. (My sci fi fandom is limited to DVD/Blu-Ray purchases and standing in line on opening day of Star Wars flicks. heh).

It's about as silly as being called a nerd on a gaming website but another member of the same gaming website.

I only played some of freespace 2. I didn't get into so much. Not sure why.

Baldur's Gate though. Man, that game was awesome. I liked Baldur's Gate 2 as well. I had the expansion pack for one of those ones, but I forget which one.

Although is a popular misunderstanding that PC gamers are hardcore and console gamers are not - because there are casual PC gamers and hardcore console gamers.

But in general, the people who play on a PC are those who know how to handle it, and I am not talking about the middle aged women who play Solitaire (these are the casual PC gamers I am referring to). I am talking about gamers who know how to get the best out of them PC both in terms of gaming and other everyday use.

On consoles however, you have a lot of casual gamers, people who don't want to be bothered with any technical details, who just want to have a good time playing a game. In that regard, consoles absolutely win over PCs, because all you ever need to do is connect the console the TV and insert the disc and start playing.

So whether PC gaming is 'geeky' or not depends on the type of user you are. If you are a user who plays a casual games on PC, then no, you are not a geek. However, if you are like the rest of us, who chose to stay with PC gaming despite the so 'pitfalls', then yes, you are a geek and you should be pround of it.

maybe he [your friend] can't handle having to build a decent rig, going through installation of a game, and customizing graphics options, and likes his comfy console where he can just slap in the disc and play.

The second thing is the controler itself. You can get a more manly grip on a console controler than you can on a typical mouse or keyboard.

It won't make their pubes grow any faster though.

On consoles however, you have a lot of casual gamers, people who don't want to be bothered with any technical details, who just want to have a good time playing a game. In that regard, consoles absolutely win over PCs, because all you ever need to do is connect the console the TV and insert the disc and start playing.

lol ? are you kidding me ? consoles are horrible to use these days.

have you tried to play brawl online ? you cant even chat and the gameplay is completely ruined by lag.

do you know how frustrating it is when your 360 gets an RRoD ?

do you know how inconvenient it is join a friends game on PSN ?

ok, i spent 3 days buying, building and overclocking my pc, but after that everything is much faster and convenient. i'll take a super fast pc over a console anyday

So I guess in your case, the PC wins over the console. But I am sure there are a lot of people who are quite happy with their Xboxes and don't even want a PC to game on.

So I guess it depends on the gamer, but if you have make a general assumption, PC gamers are more knowledgable about technology. This is just a general assumption mind you.

maybe he [your friend] can't handle having to build a decent rig, going through installation of a game, and customizing graphics options, and likes his comfy console where he can just slap in the disc and play.om3ga_storm

Or with consoles these days needing to install a swap file on the HDD to avoid longer load times, and having to download updates to fix bugs and errors, waiting long periods of time to get online due to terrible matchmaking services, so pretty much, just like the PC experience from a decade ago, but from your couch. There is not a lot of "slapping in the disc" anymore on the consoles.
