go with Empire Earth II, it's got a lot of micro management, and quite a bit of history involved with the campains and good accuracy with units and time periods...

but yes, AoE I, II, and III are great alternatives, i used to read the history sections on AoE I and it helped me in my ancient civ courses.... ^^

For post WWII, check out Harpoon 3: Advanced Naval Warfare. For WWII, check out Theatre of War, Conquest of the Aegean, or the new Talacosi. For 19th century like Napoleonics or American Civil War, check out Histwar: Les Grognards, Take Command: 2nd Manassas (and the excellent Horse and Musket mod for it), Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun.

For Naval Warfare, you've got Distant Guns which covers the Russo-Japanese conflict of 1904-06 and Jutland which covers WWI. There's also Age of Sail II: Privateer's Bounty which covers the 18th-19th century.

Not a lot on offer between the Middle Ages and Napoleon as far as real time goes. You best bet there is one of the Europa Universalis games.

For medieval and ancients, there really is nothing on offer other than the Total War series of games. Slitherine Studios also have a few RTS games covering the Romans, but they're even lighter on history and tactics than Total War. Out of the box, Total war sucks. Both Rome and Medieval II are very ahistorical, promote unrealistic tactics and have absolutely braindead AIs. There are some good mods for both that fix the first two problems. The AI is always going to be the series' weak link.

Head over to www.twcenter.net and find a mod that suits you.

Any the of the Total War series. Also, Europa was also very good-take a look at the demo and see what you think. I liked the Port Royale series as well-which you can get very cheap these days. Oh, on a side note I just read a preview on Empires:Total War;it takes place in the 1800s and introduces a lot of new concepts for the series-can't wait!

Well, Knights Of Honor is in no way historically correct, although there's lots of factions incorperated, but that's about it.
It still has a very good atmosphere though.

Crusader Kings of Europa Universalis are also really cool.

However, I don't think there actually is a good historically correct RTS really.

The games I previously mentioned all strive to stay true to history. As for people's suggestion that you look into Company of Heroes or Age of Empires, I'd say ignore that advice as they do nothing other than provide a historical theme. The gameplay mechanics, engagement ranges, tactics, secenarios, and units are wildly innaccurate and bear only the most superficial resemblance to their real historical counterparts.
