I played a lot of League of Legends until recently when I got incredibly bored/sick of the game, and that led me to try DOTA 2, and it really is an engrossing and enjoyable game.

However, I am not yet involved to the point where I play regularly, I play very rarely only when some friends are online.  I do not play solo as I do not care to take time and learn the game to the point where I am a competent player.  Usually when I play I do very poorly, but it is a pre-made team of me and four friends so as not to aggravate more serious players.

I'd like to dive deeper into it this summer when I have a lot more time (school keeps me very busy) as I had a lot of fun with it.  Some heroes are just way too much fun.

Yeah, I really like Dota 2, I think ive racked up over 300 hours on it by now. I think it can definitely be intimidating for new players, but it is a great game once you get the hang of it

I'll probably try it out more when I actually get a better computer to game on than my crappy laptop right now. I can "run" it, but it looks so ugly I don't feel like playing it.

That being said, I don't often have this problem but I find Dota 2 to be quite intimidating - there just seems to be soooo much depth and complexity to it that I don't know if I have the time or the patience to actually play it. When you read people talk about the game and see things like "I've played 1200 hours and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface", it makes me wonder if I should even try playing it. Now I'm not saying that depth in a game is a bad thing, heck I even prefer it over many of the mindless shooters these days, but Dota just seems on the completely opposite end where it's so complex that unless you dedicate a very significant amount of time to it, you probably won't be very good. At least that's my impression of it.

Play it religiously. I used to not be into these kinds of games but Dota 2 really sucked me in and got me into the whole eSports community as well. I alternate between this and League of Legends, depending on which friends are online at the time but Dota 2 is a much better game than LoL IMO. Just need to get some more LoL friends onto Dota :P.

I tend to play 2-3 matches a week. Still learning the game, champs and the flow of it all. Also, learning to throw in denying along with farming is tricky but it's slowly but surely happening.

I play a lot of League though, I was all but certain I'd never play it again after a break that lasted almost half a year but I started playing again about a month ago and the season 3 changes were amazing. It'll be a while before I tire of either.

Yes. It is one of the two or three games I play on my PC. As of right now I have put in a total of 180 hours since I got it in October of last year and 120 of those were from the last 7 weeks. I love it. :D

Never played any Moba games before but I was aware of their existence since it beginning in Warcraft 3. I gave Dota 2 a chance a couple months ago because I was bored and I enjoyed it a lot. I racked up only 66 hours but I still consider myself a noob.

All MOBA communities are bad, League and HoN being the worst. But all anger aside that doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself in the game. ;)

The community is not that bad as it used to be. In the last months I find the people to be more acceptive when it comes to new players. Of course there are and will always be retards who can't stop whining and blaming others.

As long as LoL is so popular i dont see DOTA 2 being the mainstream MOBA game therefore you wont see many talking about it. In korea alone , LoL has 1.9 million players every day playing. The total share of 32% of Korea online gaming ... Imagine the worldwide numbers now...

Played alot of Dota(WC3) before for alot of years and stopped because we moved, Dota back on our home is really huge. Then I recently discovered Valve's decision that they'll show the game on gamescom, watched all the games and after that I immidiately did eveything to get my hands on a beta key even though it cost really much back then. Usually play 5 matches everyday and I still can't get enough playing.

Yep. Played Dota since the War3 mod times (tried Demigod, LoL, HoN too), and I've only just started actually getting the least bit good at the thing. It's a fascinating game, probably the closest I've seen a game be like an actual team based sport.

I think you'll find that most 'DOTA players' play that game exclusively, so there's really no reason for them to post on Gamespot, which covers gaming news in general.  There are sites dedicated solely to DOTA news.  I don't know if you can take much out of this poll, besides that..

I agree with that. I started playing dota 2 a few months back, haven't played any other MOBAs, but it really does feel competitive like a real sport. i have even started watching some pro games and have found myself enjoying it, and being impressed by the level of skill involved to be at top level, much in the way that I'd enjoy watching sport. previously though I had never considered watching e-sports. I tried watching a starcraft 2 tournament and found it boring as hell. Dota 2 requires such a high level of team cohesion and split-second decision making that it can be genunely exciting to watch. The only issue is that, due to there being ten separate players, it can be hard to follow, even with the commentators talking at 100mph!

I guess I was expecting a high percent of non DOTA 2 players given the general lack of discussion. Not a huge sample size but roughly 3/5ths to 2/3rds of gamespot pc gamers don't play it.

I played dota on and off for 10 years or smth. I've got 5000 games EASY, more like 10k+

and it sucks srsly, you are stuck with the same people for 30-40-50 minutes and if you leave you are screwed. too many premades running around.

this game is for people who are willing to take the punishment

and I'm a pretty good player, but at one point I got tired of games depending on me. I just wanted to be 1/5 of a team, not 4/5.

most games are completely unbalanced skill wise and the sad part is you can see it in the first 5 minutes if you win or lose, balanced games are very rare, but maybe that's what makes them more enjoyable

Got 700 hours played now (about 700 games), and playing it everyday. I have lots of friends to play with though, only playing with randoms would probably make this time spent a lot less. Especially since EU got this russian problem where a very large portion of the players you end up with if playing with randoms are russians who refuse to communicate in English.

Dota 2 is pretty much free. Yeah, it costs $30 to buy beta access in the steam store, but everyone is so inundated with invites you can find users giving away invites constantly. Over on reddit they even have a bot set up to give away dota 2 invites. If you want one just ask and you will probably have twenty people willing to give you one.

Nothing changed since DotA 1. DotA is still the go-to game for me when there's nothing else to do. Or when there is. 20+ hours per week, and I'm not even at home most of the time these days, would be much higher if I could.

There's a bot that gives the invites out for free.  They prob won't allow you to deposit 2cents because of transaction costs.  Your trolling is the only joke here.

Not sure if this qualifies as competitive around here but the speedrunning communities like SDA and SRL couldn't be more friendly.  Although it's a different kind of competition.

I love Dota 2, and I do watch quite a few competitive matches regularly, but I feel like "competitive" Dota 2 players...suck lol. Not saying that I am good, I am an incredibly mediocre player. However, when I watch a professional Starcraft 2 match those guys are the bee's knees. I see these pro players for Dota 2 make the dumbest mistakes and compared to a game such as Starcraft 2 they need a 3rd of the skill required.
