I know that (some) jRPGs are doing away with random encounters and perhaps even turn basex combat, but it's still a very well established and longrunning element of jRPGs, and until most aren't doing it, I will acknowledge it! I am not talking about one particular game here, but the whole genre.
Fair enough, I just wanted to point out that THE jrpg-series of all time aka FF is abandoning (hopefully) this type of combat. My bet is that others will do the same in the future. *crosses fingers* Not that there is anything wrong with it though. I actually thought FF10 had more enjoyable combat mechanics than Fallout. BRING IT OOOON! (You really have to watch a lot of Simpsons and Family Guy to get my jokes sometimes... Although FF10 > Fallout wasn't a joke. Halo rules.)
Oblivion is not a roleplaying game. It is an abomination.
I thought you enjoyed the exploration? But yes, can't argue against the ultimate truth that you just typed.
Yeah, there are many clichés in western RPGs too, but while they are tired and overused, they aren't necessarily bad. But none of my favourite and most played roleplaying games use D&D rules, or are even vaguely similar. One is post-apocalyptic setting with turn based combat, one is a contemporary vampire setting with real time combat, and another is a dark medieval setting with real time/turn based hybrid combat.
First sentence: You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to think that tired and overused sucks. Hard. Seriously, if I see one more talking dragon or a goddamn elf, I'll flip out. Not really, but I will be very upset and irritated. That's why I want to marry every sci-fi RPG Bioware creates. It's nothing new or revolutionary when it comes to settings, but at least Tolkien does not roll over in his grave when they release those.
Stop mentioning Elder Scrolls games! They are terrible and not representative of good western roleplaying games at all!!
Morrowind rules, man, RULES! Oblivion on the other hand does not.
