I might be in the minority here but Quake...3, I love it (it's a lot better than Live even if they're extremely similar) and there are lots of players, 4 was always bad/disliked and because of that it was dead since release.
If you don't want to pay, then Quake Live is good enough.
I dunno, the only reason to play Quake 3 now is for CPMA. Quake Live is more balanced than regular Quake 3, railgun does 80 damage and lg does 7 damage per hit instead of 8.I might be in the minority here but Quake...3, I love it (it's a lot better than Live even if they're extremely similar) and there are lots of players, 4 was always bad/disliked and because of that it was dead since release.

They feel different when playing, everything, not just differences in weapons, even running, jumping and the general feel (also Quake 3 looks a lot better, with the pixel shader mod).[QUOTE="DanielDust"]

Might want to look into Nexuiz on the 29th. Its coming out for PC, Xbox and PS3. Looks pretty sweet.
Its a bit sad that the only game anyone can recommend is Quake Live.
How about Unreal Tournament. We need more Arena games then again i guess Quake Live does the job.

Developers only think we want realistic military shooters nowadays.
Haha so much for Quake Live. I tried it a while ago and didn't like how they try to squezze money out of you for little things. I guess if your happy with being thrown into a game and not creating your own you are fine. I actually grabbed Quake 4 the other day so I guess I'll just stick with that.
I'm definately grabbing Nexuiz for PC and Xbox. This game has been on my radar for a while.
I also tried Tribes Ascend, but didn't like the flying part. I would play more if there was no flying.
Hi. Get yourself a copy of Quake 3 Arena and install the Instagib 129 mod and get ready to dance.
It's a one shot one kill railgun game that is no nonsense. If you want to play a good game where
you can bounce off of walls like some psycho nutcase then go for Unreal Tournament 2004.
I'm so pleased to see someone interested in my favorite genre! :)
Here are some options available:
-Quake Live (free with a premium model; healthy number of players in both NA and EU)
-Quake 3 (not as alive as QL from what I have heard, but a fair number of people still play... from what I've heard; it's all about the mods...)
-Quake 4 (it's okay, but no one plays in comparison to QL, which 99% find a better game anyway)
-Unreal Tournament '99 (still a very large player base)
-Unreal Tournament 2004 (still a pretty big player base, not sure how it is in comparison to '99 though)
-Xonotic (an open-source, community-driven fork of the Nexuiz project -- Google is your guide, it would take too long to explain in this list)
-Sauerbraten (mostly instagib, but it has a decent number of players and it is pretty fun all around)
-Fortress Forever (absolutely SUPERB rendition of Team Fortress Cl@ssic in the Source engine; if you have any Source games it is free to download, and it has a wonderful, bustling community of passionate, dedicated, and competitive individuals who all love the game to death. I can't recommend this game enough. I mean, no joke -- can't recommend this game enough. It has become my favorite in only a little over a month).
-Alien Arena (similar to Unreal Tournament, and open source)
-Urban Terror (more of a cross between Quake 3 and Counter-Strike; well worth checking out, it has a massive community)
That's from the top of my head. Bolded and colored are my personal favorites.
Ql has instagib as well, but why would you want to play that? It's really boring. And before you say I suck at it, I haven't lost a game of instagib, ever.Hi. Get yourself a copy of Quake 3 Arena and install the Instagib 129 mod and get ready to dance.

Uhm, the feeling is worse in Quake 3, the net code is so bad like you can't hit rails properly. Running and jumping is all the same. BTW who plays quake with graphics? r_picmip 5 destroys the graphics ;p[QUOTE="DanielDust"]

Thanks for the info, I'm gonna look into them.
Yes, it is similar to Trackmania in that you can build your own arenas for others to play in. PreviewShootmania Storm isn't too far off, I believe its an arena shooter but could be mistaken

No problem, and good luck! I think you'll find Quake Live to be the most active on that list, especially if you are in Europe. Outside of that, probably Urban Terror and UT '99.[QUOTE="sihunt"]Ql has instagib as well, but why would you want to play that? It's really boring. Hi. Well the big factor in instagib is how good are the people you are playing against. It actually takes a couple of years to develop
a high skill level in this game. I played the game routinely a few years ago and I was OK at it but there were more skilled people
in the group I used to play with. It's quite possible Jiggly that you are a world class player and few can beat you but for the average or even
good player there is quite a bit of skill to be mastered.

Quake live only lets me play with other tier 4 players. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri-t8yGzMME&feature=youtu.be No noobs allowedzut's controls are not as smooth as quake's, or at least I think. I still like it though, but QL is a lot more of a hit scan game than UT.Its a bit sad that the only game anyone can recommend is Quake Live.
