Well sry but I only went up to MACOS 7 :( and that was pretty good. It did tend to treat all users as...well...users tho :(
Much prefer AmigaOS, hope they sort out number 4 soon...
Ade.
ps - windowze is ok too hehe!
OSX is a major improvement on OS9 and earlier... easier to use and can do more... but still very limiting. OSX has major issues with MS Server's (Doesn't always play along with Kerberos) and just doesn't slot into an MS network like it should. OSX is nice to look at and is an definit inspiration for many of Windows Vista's look:)
Nice OS in gerneral if you are not concerned about playing games or using extra programs (no many availeble that doesn't cost a lot)...
if you like music/making movies/photography/art than you like OSX, it's two diff people, artists like OSX and Brains like Windows. You can argue against that until you run out of breath but that is the way it is, if you're not into games or programming than you should be on a Mac...childe_roland
hmm... media companies and never use macs anymore. The only advantage they had was when they were the only ones that had 64 bit cpus and could render faster. Now pc pretty much is seen as the dominating format because they get cutting edge hardware faster and you can hire people to write custom software. Mac maybe nice if you like itunes or wanna edit a crappy home movie but pro-grade is moving towards the pc.

well i have both windows xp, vista and the last 2 mac...and mac kicks ass... i mean damn vista is terrible...i hate microsoft only thing i like about it is that you can play anygames on it....if you could do the same thing with mac paying the same price for the games and not a higher price then i would ony use mac....doesnt cash as often at least mine never crashed...doesnt get as many viruses as windows....and the antivirus program is better....norton just sucks...now on windows im using sophos but only people working at the university can use it so i got it from my dad...otherwise many of my friends are stuck with norton heavy and just plain stupid...doesnt find all the viruses....anyway go mac!!
plus microsoft vista just copied what apple allready did in the old version of mac...
OSX is amazing. At first, it takes a bit to get used to, but once it sinks in, its all good. People who bash OSX are people who haven't used it. I dual-boot, I use OSX 90% of the time and XP 10%. I only use XP to play games.Â

Considering only the OS, it's decent. In my opinion though, there's nothing that a Mac can do that a Linux system can't do just as well.   Â
While the Mac may have several nice programs included, and has a moderate software library, Windows based system have an enormous library of software and hardware to choose from. That's what will keep me from buying a Mac; well, that and the price. I can get along just as well dual booting with Windows for games and Linux for everything else.
I work on a Mac OSX but have a PC-Windows XP at home...I think it's right to say that OSX and Windows are just better at different things.spotter27
Took the words right out of my mouth. I Use windows at home and use/support both OS9/10 and Win 2000/XP at work. It's really what you're used to. Both OS have strong points both good and bad. Windows offers variety (in both programs and viruses) while OSX offers simplicity (sometimes, however, too much). One thing is for certain, though, I hate those damn Apple commercials! Heh.
I'm a graphic designer so I spend the majority of my days infront of OSX, Windows does not compare to OSX on any sort of creative level, OSX is amazing. I have a Mac Book Pro so I run Windows XP on it as well, only for gaming though. Over the years I've talked a lot with people about this same thing, it pretty much comes down to what you like to do, if you like games/programing/accounting than you probably love Windows, if you like music/making movies/photography/art than you like OSX, it's two diff people, artists like OSX and Brains like Windows. You can argue against that until you run out of breath but that is the way it is, if you're not into games or programming than you should be on a Mac...childe_roland
I study design, and I use a core 2 duo iMac there, we work on photoshop. But I also have a pc (specs in sig) at home, I don't understand how you can say the mac is better when it comes to arts because photoshop is the same on mac and windows, I use photoshop cs2 and home and class. There are no advantages of using the mac for this, in fact my home computer renders a lot faster than the core 2 duo iMac for obvious reasons.
ross, please leave these kinds of questions out because its opening OSX up for bashing and i hope the moderators close this because this parallels the whole ps3 troll issue in the 360 forums.dgguidryjr
I agree...but not because of your reason...nothing seems not to be bashable around here...it's because this is toooo out of topic to be here. Hardware, intel vs. AMD, Nvidia vs. ATI etc...at least they have some connection to PC GAMING...it connects to game performance. This will be a nice thread if it were "OSX is better in gaming than Windows"

As a graphic designer I'm sure you know why Mac has been predominantly the main choice for print/design work. Those days are long gone. The software for Windows and OS X are identical. CS3 is the same on both. Actually, the only thing I can think of that makes OS X any bit better is its internal font managment and postscript to PDF manager. Then again, when you install CS2 for Windows it sets up internal postscript to PDF capabilities. I don't know what the hell you're talking about OS X facilitating creativity. I don't use Tiger. I use Panther, and it doesn't do anything for my "creativity" except run the damn programs that I need it to.
Â
That aside, I do enjoy using my Mac and there are numerous things about OS X that would make me recommend a Mac for a family computer over any PC. Namely OS X's user security features. The OS is very well tailored to block a myriad of applications, folder access, and all sorts of stuff. Which is great if you, say, don't want your kids getting on the computer late at night to browse the internet. Also, Macs are so idiot proofed that they are far the better choice for those who are not computer savy. Windows is often too confusing for those with little to no computer knowledge. Another bonus, for me, is that I don't have any games for Mac. Therefore when I'm logged into OS X, there is no temptation to shut down InDesign to play a quick game of FEAR that would extend into several hours of playing FEAR. :p
Â
Regarding those who say OS X runs flwlessly... yeah, right! When I tried running Panther on my G4 after a fresh install, sans update, it crashed repeatedly. Even Safari would repeatedly close due to errors. Even after updating to 10.3.9 my Mac crashes and freezes more often than XP Pro. Not to mention that Mac hardware is horribly overpriced. Look at the price for their mighty mouse for Christ's sake! $50? No thanks... That's why I built a hackintosh, thanks to the OSx86 project. I use my Hackintosh for design work because it makes the transition easier between school and home (no need to remember the different keyboard shortcuts, even though they're practically the same).
Â
Overall, I do like the look and feel of OS X, and I do think it makes for an easier work-oriented enviroment (the dock is a nice feature). But I wouldn't say that OS X is superior to WinXP, but I would say it is easier and much more idiot-proof. I can't comment on Vista as I have no desire to switch. XP Pro has been running flawlessly for me for years now and I see no reason to change to a potentially problematic OS. Like most in the design world, Os X for work, WinXP for play.
well its terible nothing ever wants to load up rite sites, barealy any games, software compatibilaty, freez ups,and how un user freindly they are when it comes to istalling new hardware.iden2009

My friend, not to be rude, but i have no idea what operating system you are using. Mac OSX is much more stable then xp or vista, seeing how i have a macbook pro and not once has it ever froze on me. Most likely due to user error probably, and please can we keep the ingnorant "lolz! make sux they cant play games..." comments out of this thread, its really quite ignorant seeing how macs arent designed to be gaming machines. Ask any graphic designer how it compares to OSX, there is no comparison. Now if i want to play games i'll go on my desktop with xp, that doesent mean OSX sucks, they are just developed with different intentions in mind.Â

I am a graphic designer, there is no preference for Mac OSX over windows for me... photoshop runs the same, wacom tablets work on both... I don't see why people think design is better on Mac OSX.Â

Very true. A Mac is mostly meant for work, not gaming. Though, honestly, there is little to no CS2 performance difference between the two. And actually tests have repeatedly shown that Photoshop and several other CS2 components actually load and execute faster in WinXP than in Panther. Though, the difference is merely a matter of milliseconds for most executions to a few seconds for big, complex tasks. As for creating PDFs, there is no comparison. A Mac will smoke a PC.ÂÂ
Strangely, my crash and freeze experience has been the exact opposite of most. OS X 10.3.0 froze and crashed a lot, and XP Pro has run flawlessly for me. In all fairness, once I updated to 10.3.9 my Mac has run flawlessly as well. (I know of other G4 users that have had problems with 10.3.0, so I know it's not just me) Heck, even 10.4.9 runs flawlessly on my Hackintosh. And before you give me grief about my Hackintosh, I did buy a real copy of Tiger. I know that doesn't make it legit, but I still sleep at night. ;)
