40 and up. You should pay attention to details of the tv too. I think the bit is something that also comes into play. If you buy a cheap 1080p I doubt you'll see the difference.
I don't know lol, this topic is confusing to me. Go to avsforums and search a faq there.
Edit: I'm trying to find some info right now.

With gaming in NATIVE resolution(not the upscaling crap of consoles) you can EASILY notice the difference on a 19" monitor.Spybot_9
Hmm interesting. I recall a HDTV test of sorts here on gamespot about a year ago [which i cant seem to find now] that didnt mention that little fact o.O...now its gotten a tad confusing....

If you are going to play console games then it wont make a difference. However if you have a capable PC,then it WILL and WILL nake a difference no matter what the size.
Ive heard many a 720 v 1080p arguements but ive never "listened" much to them simply because at that time I was way to broke to even consider getting one. Now in the coming weeks I ~will~ be purchasing one and ONLY one to last me for the next 10 or so years[A bit of exaggeration]. Therefore I want to get a 1080p ~noticable~ LCD while still not spending too much. So at what size TV does the differnece between 720 and 1080p become noticable/very noticable?nexusprime
how far will you be sitting from the TV? if you will see a huge improvement on a 19" TV if your face is inches from it. If your 10ft away from the same TV you will see no difference.
* this assuming you are comparing a 720p source to a 1080p
If you are going to play console games then it wont make a difference.Spybot_9
Ill be playing all current gen and some last gen systems on it as well as Blu ray movies. Why wont it make a difference though? Is GT prologue in 1080p the same as 720p?

With gaming in NATIVE resolution(not the upscaling crap of consoles) you can EASILY notice the difference on a 19" monitor.Spybot_9Thats because your sat usually a foot away from the screen. You cant compare it to a tv that your sat mabye 10-15 feet away from, the veiwing you experience is different.
a 1080p picture will look sharper, but not necessarily have better picture quality. Factors such as tv size and viewing distance also make a difference to the overall viewed picture.
I would say that 1080p isnt critical if your viewing at 40" or below. You'll be better putting more of your budget towards better PQ rather than extra pixels. If you going above 40" then the resolution jump from 720 to 1080 will be a fair bit more noticable, but again I would say dont get wrapped up in the the resolutions as this doesnt guarantee a high quality picture.
If you have 2 tv's of say 40", and at the same price point, its highly likely the lower res tv will produce the better picture by having better colours and processing (which leads to smoother delivery of moving images).
You also havent said if your going to be opting for LCD or plasma.Your going to pay a bit more for a 1080p plasma, but the results can be simply stunning.
My advice would be, if your looking at 40" or below, dont get wrapped up in 1080p. You can see a difference but its not enough to warrant the extra price, or cut in quality depending on how you target your budget. If you find a good tv your happy with that has 1080p then all the better, but you need to make sure your also looking at things like contrast ratios and for LCD's, response times that are quick. If your looking to go above 40" then personally I would go 1080p, but this is only going to make a huge difference on something like a Blu-ray movies (if your into your movies though then its deffinatly going to be worth it). Console gaming wont show as good a result due to the fact consoles only really ever do 720 native and anything higher is upscaled.

GT5 runs nativly at 1080p and the difference is huge.
Yet GTAIV runs nativly at 720p and has to be up-scaled.

GT5pro isn't native 1080p, and gta4 for Ps3 isn't native 720p either.
