I'll be using them mostly at home. The portability of the MTPC is nice, but not necessary. Sound quality is the main thing for me, and the problem here is that I can get the M50 for $120 used and the MTPC for $160 used. I know that generally, they are sold brand new at most major retailers for around $200 and $400 respectively (that's the price of the M50s here in Canada; I've heard it's cheaper elsewhere). However, I have also heard that the M50 is really good for its price range while some people have said that the MTPC is not worth the full price of $400, and is more suited to a price tag of around $300. Considering that headphones usually beat IEMs in overall sound quality in the same price range, I'm wondering how different the sound quality of these will be in respect to their identities as headphones and IEMs.

Basically the question is: which has more value and is an overall better deal? The M50 for $120 or the MTPC for $160?

I forgot to mention that I don't own an amp and will be plugging these into my Blackberry phone or PC.

The Monster Turbine Pro Copper headphones are getting a lot of praise across the board, and look like they're a pretty nice pair of earbuds. I've said this many times and I'll say it again: Never discount a product based solely on brand name. Even Skullcandy has some decent stuff in their lineup (the Avaitors), and their headphones are notoriously muddy and bass-heavy. That said, I think you'll be happier in the long-run with the ATH-M50 considering for what you'll be using them (in-home use). On-ear headphones are easier to take on and off and more comfortable over long periods of time. They also require almost zero maintenance (you've got to clean IEMs on a regular basis due to earwax, sweat, etc.). As an alternative, if portability and appearance are a concern, consider the V-Moda M80's, which also sound fantastic. The ATH-M50s are a better buy, though, if you don't mind a bit less portability and the neutral appearance. Good luck, Boz

Actually, the Monster Turbine Pro line are excellent IEM's that rival the quality of other top IEM's, such as the Sennheiser IE8. Sure the Beats line are overpriced for what they sound like, but the Turbine Pro's are amazing IEM's that have great highs and lows. The warranty on these things is also amazing (life time warranty, plus a one time accidental replacement, meaning if you break it yourself, like rip off the cord, they will still replace it for you, no questions asked). So yeah dont just base the quality of MTPC's and MTPG's of the fact that they are made by monster, because frankly, they are the best IEM's I have used (and I have had Sennheiser IE8, CX390, CX870, Sennheiser HD280 and HD380, Sony Extra Bass 50mm, and a bunch of other lesser know and quality earphones). That being said, I would argue that the MTPC's should be around $300 (although you can get it for that much from Amazon.com), although if you wait for boxing week, you may be able to get them for $100 from Futureshop (this happened this year). I would personally never get IEM's for more than $150 (and $400 for them, at least in my eyes, seems absurd). I have never owned the ATH-M50, but I have listened to them before, and they are also excellent headphones, although I personally felt that the HD380's sound better than them. But anyway, they are also great sound headphones. What you have to consider is where will you be using them? If you will be using them in public and taking them out, then I would argue an IEM is better, but if it is for only home use, than I would go with the M50's. In terms of the better value, well value is totally up to the person, but I would say the M50's. But you cant go wrong with either. You should also consider the MTPG's if you can find them for cheap (almost as good as the MTPC, just has less bass). Good luck.

I noticed someone on CAM selling a pair of AKG K240 Monitors (600ohm) for $75, might also be worth a look if you're on a budget.

So you guys are saying that for at-home use, the M50s will be better? Is it only because of the easy maintenance or do they actually still have better sound quality than the MTPC even though the MTPC retails for 2x the price?

In the headphone world, price and quality do not always go hand-in-hand. I cannot say that one is necesarily better, because I haven't listened to both personally, but based on what I know and for what you will be using the headphones, I think you'll be happiest with the M50s. In general I would only ever consider IEMs or earbuds for traveling and exercise. For at-home use it's either on-ear or over-ear. Good luck, Boz

Not necessarily. I honestly cant say which one sounds better, given that I have not compared both against each other. All I can tell you is that both sounded quite good to me, with my impression of the MTPC being one where i thought it was the best IEM I had ever listened to, while on the other hand I felt that the M50s sounded great, especially for the price you are paying. As Bozanimal said, for home use, headphones are better (at least imo), while IEMs are more suited for travel, when you go to class in Uni, commute on public transportation, and etc. You can go wrong with either, so just get it based on where/how u think you will use it.

I have both and i have to say that mtcp wins hands down. they are very light, sounds better (vocal, more deep bass and sound doesn't get to sharp and painful with high volume), they have 20 different pairs of buds and the foam once are like a kind of sponge so it shapes after you ear and goes back to normal when you take it out. the ath-m50 are pretty heavy but gives a tiny little bit more surround, but it doesn't really matter. it is pretty heavy and tight, but it sounds not as good and sound bad after hours with mtcp. mtcp are much better, but they cost twice as much. people complains that they are not worth it and you can get something even better for those money etc but they sounds 3 times even though they are overpriced , they are better so you cant use money as a argument. if you pay 150 and not 400 than you use hours with lower sound quality and save 250 that you can use on something else, but I likes expesive stuff because they often looks and feels better. (I just save for another month or so if i really need to) almost everywhere i go, they say that stuff by monster and beats are not woth **** but these are the only one i have tried and i have to say that they are awesome. maybe they aren't worth 400, but they are still worth it. you can probably find something heavy, none-portable amp-needing headphones for the same amount and get better sound, but i don't think it is necessary. they are iem and sounds better. i know this is late, but perhaps i help others who are thinking about the same thing :) P.S I bought a pair of mtcp used for 200$ and they are 2 years old so they are burned in, while my ath-m50 is 3 month old and used for 30-40 hours so perhaps they get better after burning in. i don't really care because i like the mtcp better. i can use them with my phone without needing an amp and i can use them home much easier that the ath-m50 with a 5m long cable or something that is hard to put in a pocket
