Welcome.

I recently spent alot of money to build a new computer.

I have 2gig of ram, intel core duo E8400 and an ATI radeon 4870.

Yet when I try to max bioshock at 1680X1050, I only get 25-45 FPS.

I can run devil may cry 4 all maxed with at least 150 fps, yet bioshock runs like crap.

What the heck is wrong with my card or the game?

Does Bioshock have that little Ad in the beginning of the game that says "NVIDIA" in a whispering voice? if so that's your problem, the game is ment to be played with Nvidia GPU.

Something is wrong. You should be getting much higher fps, average of 118 fps at 1680x1050 according to Anandtech.

Dont matter, the 4870 should blow almost everthing out of the water in bioshock.

Edit: Matrix beat me to it

Any ideas what could be wrong then?

Drivers? The card itself?

It could be the card... Sometimes they are just broken.

What driver version are you using ?
Open Catalyst Control Center and tell us the 3D settings (AA, Adaptive AA, AF, Catalyst AI)
Is VSync (vertical refresh under All Settings) enabled in CCC ? If so disable it.

For the drivers here is a screenshot:

Lower AA to 4X edge-detect (4x edge-detect = 12x CFAA). Or use 4x Box.
Disable Adaptive AA or set it to Performance.
8x AF should be enough, Bioshock doesn't have very large areas.
More info on AA modes here.

I was doing some reseach on the ATI amd forum while I waiting.

I had to disable everything in the CCC, now I can run bioshock maxed around 140 fps.

Damn CCC, never using that thing again.

You don't have to disable everything in CCC. 4xAA, 8xAF, mipmap at high will make the game look much better, while having good framerates.

Uninstall CCC and try ATI Tray Tools then. As matrixian said you should really enable those settings,

Don't uninstall CCC; it's a very useful tool if you know how to use it properly.

For now, go to CCC and select "Defaults" at the bottom. CCC should now let application settings decide how to apply effects such as AA and AF.

Oh and by the way, 8xCFAA Edge Detect uses 24 pixel samples to apply anti-aliasing, as opposed to the standard MSAA/"Box" sample count of 2/4/8. Hence why you usually only enable Edge Detect with CrossFire systems or with older games.
