heya people ati recently started trotting around a new line of mobile radeon laptop chipsets. labeled the 500v series. well truth be told this line is actually rebranded mobility radeon hd 4000 series chipsets. still dx10, still opengl. 3.1, still the same preformance as the lower end hd 4000 series chipsets.

thought me and the good people at semi-accurate should get that across.

Well that's not too bad, and concerning mobile parts, this is going to the defense of Nvidia as much as it is ATI. There were statements that OEMS put a lot of pressure on Nvidia, they wanted new model numbers so that their new lineups would appear fresh. When your job is to sell chips, it would be stupid not to make a subtle change such as naming to secure sales for your company. Sure it looks bad to people like us, but it's business, and everyone will try to undercut everyone. In the end you need sales, you need to keep your business running and moving forward. I'm willing to sort out through the naming mess if it'll keep competitive business alive. I haven't seen any official news of the above article, but we'll see where that goes.

I understand the business reasons for Nvidia and ATI doing this type of thing, but it's inherently evil IMO because it's an attempt at deceiving potential customers. What you end up with are the people like us that research specs and catch on to the rebranding gimmicks, and people that don't know a darn thing so they get fooled. Obviously this type of approach only makes the product line look "fresh" to those people who are being deceived. I don't think it's acceptable in business to actively create a false appearance to gain a monetary advantage. If you have a good product, call it what you're going to call it, and leave the name so that customers know what they're getting. Anything else is dishonest business. Of course there are much worse, less honest things going on in business everyday.. but this is the one that I want to rant about right now:) This type of business is, in the long run, doomed to failure.

ATi has rebranded once, and only its mobile chips. Nvidia has done it many times (Often with the same card).

lol so this is the latest excuse, i know its just business they do what they have to and i dont have ill feelings towards them. i will say that a company that deserves my respect should not do this not even once.

but thats just my innocent mind, its a tough world out there

Im not saying that Ati is exempt from being laughed at. They still deserve a slap on the back of their hand. They just arent at the face beating level of Nvidia.

You can't really upgrade a laptop GPU without upgrading the entire laptop so I doubt anyone is going to friviously upgrade just because their laptop gets a little outdated (at least I would hope not). The only people this will affect are those who are in the market for a new laptop anyway, and who will opt for a laptop with a 5xxx mobility card instead of a 4xxx one. Unless a companny charges more for the 5xxx laptop instead of simply retiring the older model as usual I really don't see how this is going to be a really big deal.

For example, Radeon HD 4650 was renamed to Radeon HD 5165. Btw, Radeon HD 4x00s are DX10.1. Using Mobility Catalyst 10.4, OpenGL is at 3.2 version.

Via ExpressCard-to-PCI-Express adapter, I have connected an external ATI Radeon HD 5770 to my Sony Vaio FW-45GJ (fitted with Mobility Radeon HD 4650). Refer to http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-vidock-experiences.html

I have no problem with either company rebranding mobile gpus. My problem was when Nvidia rebranded the 8800gts 512 and the rest of the 8 series over and over; eliminating my ability to legitally purchase another one because they "ended" the series. It pained me to stare at the 9800gtx knowing it was identical to my 8800gts 512 lol.

I obtained my info from http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-vidock-experiences.html

I purchased US$85 PE4H-EC2C adapter solution i.e. it has an extra USB port.

I can use adapter with other desktop PCI-Express cards.

Using GPUTool, I have overclocked my Mobility Radeon HD 4650 to 600Mhz/750Mhz and 550Mhz/800Mhz i.e. the temps are around 61 C to 63 C. I haven't pushed it to 633Mhz/815Mhz. I rarely overclock since I max details Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age at 1280x720p and still playable at 1600x900p.
