Awesome midrange, 3870 right below 8800gt performance, but the 3850 is even better value, blows away 8600gts.

Ill prolly get the 3870 in december. Unless the 256mb 8800gt provides a better value.

Once I'm sure theres no problems with their Linux drivers..RichterBelmont7

Their next Linux driver release is supposed to be open sourced and add a lot of functionality that Linux users have had to go elsewhere to find.

Yeah, I really want an HD 3870, I wanted an HD 2900, but didn't want to have to get a new PSU.

I've been tracking their plans pretty closely and while their drivers have improved tons theres still lots of problems with video, compiz, etc. the news was not that they would open-source their drivers but that they would open source lots of the GPU specifications and deliver better drivers. They have but unfortunately they are still a bit behind Nvidia and Intel as far as support goes.

The sheer performance is great, in fact the Linux drivers have been outpacing the Windows ones as far as performance goes in some things, but video playback and the other problems brought up by myself and others need a solution.

Ordered my HD3850 already, awaiting it's arrival (and when it does arrive, I'm giving my system a format - it's cluttered and deserves it's spring cleaning :))

i would get one, but i'm not gonna have any money for a while so i'm gonna wait till something better comes out and lowers in price...

but i have a question, although it may be stupid, does the 3870 require 2 PCI-E x16 slots, i got the impression that it does...

Nope - unless your going to run a Crossfire setup.

However, the HD3870 is a dual slot card, you will probably lose a PCI-Express x1/x4 or a PCI slot (since the fan will be blocking it)

The interface uses one PCI-e x16, however the cooler is a dual-slot cooler, so it'll block whatever slot is under your PCI-e slot. However I prefer dual-slot cooling, the best place for hot air is out of the case, and it's not like I use the PCI-e x1 covered by my graphics card anyway.

Not me when the 8800GT still beats thoughts cards and is cheaper. Go to tomshardware. They have a review and performance of noth cards and they dont even beat the 8800GT.

um huh?

Also, the 8800gt doesn't beat it by much, drivers are new, and um I read that the ATi has better image quality. Also its cheaper.

Except its not cheaper...not even close. Try to have the basic facts down before wading in.

The 3870 is cheaper, cooler, runs quieter & draws less power than the 8800GT, & offers almost as much performance. For those reasons the 3870 is the better choice. When you consider the fact that Crossfire scales bette than SLI, its just a more convincing argument to go for the 3800 series cards in general.

I ordered my 3870 512 mb yesterday for $220. I've been seeing newer reviews that actually has the 3870 showing better performance then it did yesterday (Even on Crysis). It must have been the driver update that was released earlier today so I'm pretty pumped about that. It's getting close to 8800 GT performance and in some casees actually ties it in performance. As long as driver updates continue to work on performance then the 3870 videocards will really be worth it.

Any Intel chipset that supports Crossfire. I'm not sure which ones do, Google it. HD 3870's should perform quite exceptionally, much better than a single 8800GT.

I wouldn't recommend going CrossFire, unless you have an Intel 975X chipset or X38 chipset. The P965 and P35 chipsets are in capable of splitting the PCIe lines from the northbridge (there's only one exception, but it's more expensive than the superior X38 chipset), and thus have unbalanced PCIe lanes going to the cards (one card runs with 16 PCie lanes, the other only with 4). This bottlenecks the card with the lesser bandwidth.

What's your budget, and do you already have an existing CPU?

well I finally got mine. Its the 3850. It has the best price to performance ratio, and its cheap so poor people like me can afford it. I have a feeling that the 3850 will surpass the 8800gts 640mb when it gets good drivers.
