Once I'm sure theres no problems with their Linux drivers..RichterBelmont7
Their next Linux driver release is supposed to be open sourced and add a lot of functionality that Linux users have had to go elsewhere to find.
Yeah, I really want an HD 3870, I wanted an HD 2900, but didn't want to have to get a new PSU.

I've been tracking their plans pretty closely and while their drivers have improved tons theres still lots of problems with video, compiz, etc. the news was not that they would open-source their drivers but that they would open source lots of the GPU specifications and deliver better drivers. They have but unfortunately they are still a bit behind Nvidia and Intel as far as support goes.
The sheer performance is great, in fact the Linux drivers have been outpacing the Windows ones as far as performance goes in some things, but video playback and the other problems brought up by myself and others need a solution.
i would get one, but i'm not gonna have any money for a while so i'm gonna wait till something better comes out and lowers in price...
but i have a question, although it may be stupid, does the 3870 require 2 PCI-E x16 slots, i got the impression that it does...

Nope - unless your going to run a Crossfire setup.
However, the HD3870 is a dual slot card, you will probably lose a PCI-Express x1/x4 or a PCI slot (since the fan will be blocking it)
Not me when the 8800GT still beats thoughts cards and is cheaper. Go to tomshardware. They have a review and performance of noth cards and they dont even beat the 8800GT.Killfoxum huh?
Also, the 8800gt doesn't beat it by much, drivers are new, and um I read that the ATi has better image quality. Also its cheaper.

Except its not cheaper...not even close. Try to have the basic facts down before wading in.
I wouldn't recommend going CrossFire, unless you have an Intel 975X chipset or X38 chipset. The P965 and P35 chipsets are in capable of splitting the PCIe lines from the northbridge (there's only one exception, but it's more expensive than the superior X38 chipset), and thus have unbalanced PCIe lanes going to the cards (one card runs with 16 PCie lanes, the other only with 4). This bottlenecks the card with the lesser bandwidth.
What's your budget, and do you already have an existing CPU?
