Does anyone know if a 280watt psu is sufficient enough for an Ati radeon2600XT 256MB or Nvidia geforce 8600gt 256mb running with aAMD athlon x2 4200+. Thanks.

I'm not sure about the ati radeon2600xt 256mb but the nvidia geforce 8600gt 256 should use 350watts as minimu goese.
I say I think on that one cause I have the 8600 gt xxx and that is what it uses and it is from the nvidia geforce series and it does have 256mb with it.
My Mom has a 300wat power supply in her pc and that isn't enough for me to put in my old 7600gt oc 256mb in.
That card needs a 350wat power supply and I have a 400wat power supply from another pc. So I will eventually put the old one into the new one.

Thanks for the help and advive. Same goes for every1 else that has posted:)
what happens if the power supply provides insufficient power? is the only consequence the card not reaching its full potential? meme378The PSU can die, possibly taking the grafx card and/or even the CPU + Mobo with it.

yikes. better go woth the 1000w psu that u guys suggested;)

If you have a 280W PSU, check if your case can allow those cards to fit first. It sounds like a Micro-ATX PSU which commonly goes hand and hand with cases that only allow video cards with the "Low Profile" descriptor. Why worry about the power supply if the card won't fit in the case?
A "Low Profile" video is shorter and usually are designed to need less power to fit on Micro ATX PSUs.

yes that is a valid point actually. do you know if manufacturers make a "low profile" version of these cards?*keeps fingers crossed*
yeah theres a galaxy low profile 8600gt. they're not very common though.
If you do find it remember to remove the metal bracket before you fit it

Would i need extra cooling. My computer is a stock one- not customised by me. The only fan (excluding the psu one) is the front fan i think.

Does your computer run well with no problems, even though it only has a 300watt PSU (especially for gaming applications)?

Do note that their test system seems to have a bare minimum of components installed. I'm not very good at predicting these things but I personally wouldn't risk it. Make sure you have a good quality psu and try entering your system specs after following this link.

The pc that my Mom uses is only a single core pc.
I forgot to enven metion what kind of pc that I have.
It is an AMD Athlon acer 3800+ 2ghz with 2 gigs of ram but am only able to use 1.5 of it a 300+ hard drive but I have 2 so it adds up to that amount there also I have a 8600 gt xxx 256mb with a 500 watt power supply and a sound blaster audigy 4 sound card. I think that is it I'm not sure about the motherboard and the rest of it although it is easy to find but still I don't want to go and look it up.
My Mom she has a intel HP 3.7ghz with 1 gig of ram and a internal graphic card I think it is a ATI radeon 200 series not sure how much mb it has. A internal sound card. With a 300 power supply.

Those power calculator are not very accurate, I trust some good test review more than those calculators.
Note that the power calculator does not says the exact power used by a configuration. it says the recommended power
supply wattage for that configuration

I tried this website earlier and i agree, they are very approximate values.
edit: removed quotes since I messed up the quotations even more and am too tired to fix them..
I'm not saying it's infallible and it won't give you an exact number of power being used cause it's not measuring anything. It makes an estimate for a particular configuration and adds some head room. The numbers in the linked review are good for comparing cards not for determining what psu is needed because the test system used seems to consist of no more then a mobo, a cpu, a gpu, ram and one hdd. Nothing like an average gaming desktop which commonly has usb powered devices, sound card, case fans, at least 2 hdds, dvd-drive(s), etc. which all need power.edit: removed quotes since I messed up the quotations even more and am too tired to fix them..

yes i completed messed up the quotes somehow. anyway, thanks for the link anyway. doperipherals such as printers and monitors take up much of the systems power because they are connected to the mains anyway?

No. System Power is based on the power supply. The only devices to worry about are those that are powered by the USB ports if any at all. Having more stuff plugged in the outlets of the house does not affect your computer unless you are using an extension cable with a gauge number higher than 12.
