Would my P4 significantly bottleneck the ATI Radeon HD 4770? If so, how could I lower the bottleneck?

you will see a bottle neck but one way to decrease the bottleneck is to overclock that cpu by ALOT or the best way is to buy a new cpu, cmon games running on a p4????

Oh yes, there'll be a huge bottleneck.

Overclocking would alleviate it slightly, but Pentium 4's aren't very good overclockers.

You should get a new CPU really. The Pentium 4 just can't cut it anymore.

The bottleneck will only be seen when you play a game that would like something better in a cpu. But if your playing a game that doesnot need more then a P4 to run good you wont see any bottlenecking. A P4 is more then enough to run the video card. but it depends on what game you will see the performance loss.

really the bare min. i would touch games with anymore is a superclocked celeron dual core, OC pentium dual core, or stock e5400 from the intel side of things

nope you need a real dual core for that (like core 2 duo, anthalon 64 x2/II 64 x2, phenom x2/II x2) a pentium 4 or D or celeron dual core or pentium Dual core jsut wont cut it really. well your welcome to try it on a epntium dual core.. but i pitty the fool who does that.

GTA4 is poorly optimised is very CPU intensive... I also noticed a bump of 10fps or so going from a stock 550 BE to a unlocked 4 core overclocked to 3.3Ghz, dual core is the absolute minimum for that game even if it manages to run on a P4 you wont be happy one bit with the image quality or your framerate. The card is and performs good with GTA4 on medium/high along with a dual core at 3ghz, with a pentium 4... you'll be lucky to see half the frames on the lowest settings.

I got a worse GPU on a more powerful CPU that is bottlenecked nicely... so yes, yes it will bottleneck.

i dont know about the 4770,but i can feel that you are on a really right budget since you have a P4 and a 8500GT.go for a core2Due,i think any Dual core will be great in comparison with your P4,and with overclock you can get superb results.my E2180 is considered to be in the low end of the core2due series and its easily overclocked from 2 GHz to 3 Ghz without any extra cooling.since you are already using Nvidia, the 9800 is really cheap right now,but the 200 series is better, see if you can afford one.but really the 9800 is great for its price.

4770 has sketch benchmarks.. at times it outpreforms the 9800gtx+ other times it barely meets the 9800gt..

im really not into ATI and i dont know anything about their cards,so what about the prices for both the 9800GTX and the 4770? of course if they are the same or near, then he should go for the 4770.otherwise,the guy sounds really poor like me,so any 9800 will do it.
