No. The price, and the dual-gpu setup on the ATi cards is better. The performance of the NVidia cards are about 10-20% better in most benchmarks. A 8800GT or a 8800GTS is around $250-$350. A HD 3870 is $200, and the HD 3850 are about $160.
Crossfire of 2 HD 3870 is better than SLi of 2 8800GT for price and about 5% better I believe. The new 790FX can support up to 4 video cards. The new NVidia motherboards can support up to 3 cards.
ill show you rouhly how it goesthis is agood comparsion except the 8800GTX can beat 8800GTS 512 except when we are talkin about highest res + highest settings.

Ouch... that hurts me deep down = ( but I must say, the 512 8800gts is about on par with the GTX, the GT is a bit below, and the old GTS isn't much far behind in gameplay.. but the benchmarks will not go over as well. They are all great cards imo though, and can play almost anything out there. I don't really care much about crysis... I will play it, and save it for 2 years down the road or so.
As far as overall performance goes, would getting an 8800GTX be a better choice than two HD3870's in crossfire for the same price, or the other way around?

A single-card setup is more consistant and reliable, but I wouldn't get an 8800GTX at this point in time. the 8800GTS 512MB is just too good of a card at a great price to recommend the 8800GTX any more.

Hmm, I think it would be better, but not too sure.

i think the smartest thing now would be to wait to see what ATI and Nvidia have up there sleeves for next yeari think the smartest thing now would be to wait to see what ATI and Nvidia have up there sleeves for next yearHis card's having problems - so waiting really doesn't seem possible, although I did recommend he try aftermarket cooling on his X1900XTX.

8800GTS 640MB beats 2900XT in Crysis. (I think) :D
lol i get really confused these days as to how they do overall because some do good in some games... i say back to the good old days of GTX>>640>>320 and thats all you needed to know.. :)Of these two, which is a better choice?
8800GTS 512- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150261
8800GT 512 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143117
I am currently leaning toward the 8800GT; does that seem like the right decision?
