I am just curious what side everyone backs here, so I thought it would be interesting to get a tally going :-)

I usually go with the underdog, but seeing as ATi is going pretty good for an "underdog" I go with whoever has the best value for performance

I didn't even consider it as a fight-starting topic. I'm sorry if it turns into that :-(

A little off topic, but what "Voudoo" series of card do you think we would be on now if 3dfx was still in the game?

I don't care, they're both good in some areas, terrible in others, and the only time i really pay any interest in the ATI vs Nvidia war is when i'm buying a new vid card.

NVIDIA treated me like jerks when my 7600GS was acting up, so now I'll stick with ATI (AMD). But I'm an Intel fan, so CrossFire on Intel boards may fade out over time. :(

To be honest, I like AMD, but I have never cared for ATI at all, I'll stick with nVidia, it seems like there gonna be winning for awhile, until maybe the r600, but, they'll do something about it...

What can I say, on the high end (minus DX10 cards since ATI's one hasn't been released yet), I'd for ATI, but on the mid to low end, I'd go for nVidia. But overall, my choice still has to be ATi. :D

I always buy ATi cards in the high end for my main rig, but I think Nvidia are a lot more competitive in the mid range, I have 2 lesser rigs running Nividia cards.  Overall though, I def prefer ATi.

I prefer Nvidia, over the last few years I have had much better luck with Nvidia in terms of quality. I would have a tough time switching back to ATI, but if the R600 is really good at midrange Maybe I'll pick one up. But unlikely I'll purchase an R600 over a 8800GTS 320mb. But that preference is limited to only my rigs. If I build or give advice on someone else's rigs i go for best component for their needs. Whether it be ati, Nvidia, Intel, AMD or whatever.

4 months ago I would have said nVidia but I bought an ATI Radeon X1600 Pro and loved, I'm going back to nVidia for the 8800 series but I am no longer inclined towards either company.

If ATi R600 comes before April (hopes earlier) then I think I'll grab it. I hope it's finally available because I'm really tired with all that waiting. I just hope it won't need a PSU over 1kW too run it and that it doesn't runes like a hairdryer. :?

lol so in actual fact nvidia are better in low-mid range...... and the true high end *cough* DX10 *cough* they are the only company so ati are beat at the moment........ I always have a bad habit of going for the under dog though so Im ATI :)

I simply prefer Nvidia because their mid-range cards have fantastic value for the performance and their driver support is solid - and Vista drivers are on the way.

You are biased, I've had numerous drivers from them, never had a problem. ATI was good in 2D graphics cards and for general purpose graphics and it's fast RAMDAC when PC's weren't that powerfull, but once Nvidia broke through, they conquered the 3D world pretty fast and much better then ATI still does. However, I see ATI getting back at Nvidia since the start of last year. HDR was a bit of a miss, and temps were not what they should be, but the cooling and the tech. has changed a lot since then, and since ATI basically is ATI+AMD now, it's starting to look better on ATI's work and technological development.

Wait, are you talking to me again?

Because, I was sorta just joking.
I don't hold a grudge with a company just because of one small point in time.
Though this is quite a large black mark on Nvidia's record, touting "Vista Readiness" and having it be complete BS.

My main point is, everyone talks **** about ATi's drivers, at one point in time, back in the day when the fact of the matter is Nvidia also has it's problems.
Both companies churn out good quality products, that you can almost always be sure of.
But they also both have their problems, whether it be poor performance from a card, bad/non-existent drivers or random DOAs.

You should have added some smilies or something else instead of just calling it a POS as a joke... It sure sounded like a biased answer to me when you wrote that. I've used ATI cards, together with Diamond and 3DFX for basic 2D operations in 286DX40's and those were very neat cards. They have been used in the first Pentium series a lot as well. Driver support was fantastic, installation and operation was a breeze. Remember that back then, software updates weren't that easy to get. No easy access to the net in those days which forced manufacturers and engineers to deliver stable drivers, or loose serious amounts of revenue due to RMA procedures and sending out updates and drivers on floppies (sometimes on CD's, if you were lucky and had a $200 quad speed CD-ROM drive) via mail. ATI's domination was there until they had to prove their reputation in 3D. The first little steps with hardware like the 'Rage' cards and the like were good, until new games arrived that were a lot more demanding... The first Radeon cards were good, but hot and unstable. The strategy was simple: ATI wanted to avoid active cooling and noise as a result of that. You could see lots of people looking for small 40mm fans in those days and wanted to know ways to attach them to the small heatsink in order to get some cooling on the already hot GPU (even in 2D mode!) The heat, cooling hacks, desire to OC and unstable drivers gave birth to the success of the Omega drivers, which allowed for the first time to OC the GPU and mem clock via software at your own little risk and also proved to be better drivers then the ones from ATI themselves... The first 3rd party contracts appeared then as well, Radeon cards weren't only distributed and supported by ATI alone as well. I could go on and on and on, but this gives you an idea from where it started to go wrong with ATI. They tried to repair the damage, but it was too late. And when similar types of cards appeared that were cooler, the newly developed card suffered from the same heat issues. Result: redesign the GPU and the cooling system, again. Now ATI start to crawl out of it, but it's a bit late. However, their performance is good, cooling starts to get a lot better and often various techniques and technologies look better with an ATI card then one from Nvidia, while Nvidia is better in other regions. However, Nvidia was from the start better in cooling, GPU and PCB robustness and driver stability, hands down.

I've always been partial to my boys in green, NVIDIA for GPUs and AMD for CPUs. That said, performance is always greater than brand preference which is why I'm rolling with an E6600.
