OK, maybe not THE worst but i'm sure its up there. I'v said all this before but again the stupid prices and insane classification system has me fuming at the state of PC gaming down under.

Mass Effect, 26.99 GBP ( around $49 AUD), Steam has it at $49 USD ( $56 AUD) Australian retail averages at $90 AUD.

So i have a choice, Pay Steam and wait a month until my download cap resets (another stupid Australian thing) then spend 2 days downloading or pay $90.

yeah, i've heard about that. Also heard it doesn't always work. Still, with only 2mb broadband it will still take forever. It's like living in England 10 years ago lol

I don't think the issue is location on Steam, but rather his ISP's monthly bandwidth cap. That sucks to hear, OP. Aussieland definitely has some strange prices and a pretty weird classification system. You DO have the Ford Falcon ute, though. I want one.

Id place most of mid Africa far beyond Aussies. Somalia and Zimbabwe come to mind. One has no fomal government the other has seen inflation beyond 1trillion % in a months time. People quite literally cart money around in wheelbarrows.

Yes, i will get this version. It just gets me mad i will be paying double UK and US prices. In some cases (not Mass Effect 2) we pay double for an inferior product, ( L4D2 and Fallout 3 spring to mind).

Do you have any kind of import option, get someone in the US to buy and send the game to you?

As far as internet speeds, the fastest available DSL here (which I'm on) is limited to around 1mb/s max download speed and around 512 kb/s upload. At least I'm not limited on my bandwidth usage or how many internet connections I use within the house (I can simultaneously have my PC, 360, PS3 and/or my Xbox all connected).

I live in New Zealand, and games are hella expensive here, worse than Australia. Some games can cost $100 or more when released. PSP games in particular for me are ridiculously priced. I remember Dissidia: Final Fantasy costing $89.99 when released, so obviously I didn't buy. Fortunately the rating system is pretty lenient here.

I don't know a heck of lot about that, but from what I've heard we are pretty far behind. I think companies started selling broadband internet around 2004/2005, if that gives you an idea. My particular plan with Telecom is $50 per month for a 20gb cap; dl speed is about 12mbps. The government began a country wide fibre optic project last year which apparently will take about ten years to finish. Can't get much faster than light speed though.

Well I have been too India few times, while I cannot say about the net speed, but the games were really cheap --- brand new recently released GTA IV with the poster and everything for $20 made my jaw drop on the floor :P

lol..every time the church is involved in something it makes out that games are the result of violence. I guess no one bothered to point them to the direction of what politicians are passing as international law. I'm a gamer in Australia and I never buy locally if it's available cheaper, this includes Steam. There are ways to purchase from other Steam stores, I'm not about to tell you how but GIYF. I also import my console games, my movies, my music including iTunes (just like Steam there are ways to have iTunes accounts from other countries). As for your complaints about internet once again that is your choice. There are plenty of providers out there that offer HUGE caps in Australia. IMHO complaining about this stuff is silly. You just need to say hell no and show your dis-respect by buying elsewhere.

The prices are high because people are lazy and don't shop around. For example a game that costs $119 at EB will cost $79 down the road. People just over exaggerate this stuff.

You gotta admit though, the prices regarding dedi servers and unlimited bandwidth to a pure 100 up link is similar to a house loan.

Honestly I don't see the point of your post. Yes it's expensive to have someone host a dedicated server for you with a 100 Mb uplink. But guess what? That'd be expensive anywhere, and once again if it's cheaper you can always host off shore.

Was merely pointing out that the prices are somewhat over exaggerated in the au, perhaps it has to do with the distance or the level of cable line connecting to the u.s., asia, and europe. I mean, they are considered slightly stone age but that is the price to pay when moron's are in charge of telecommunications. As for offshore placement, totally agree, i run several as we speak, have no issue with the price range especially if you consider central europe and renting square meters within the data-center instead of rack space is an obvious move to go providing you have sufficient clients to cover the basics. As you pointed out to the earlier poster, there are many ways to find cheap games instead of blindly paying some insane price over the counter. People just need to open their eyes and seek just that extra little bit.

Internet speeds/pricing are over exaggerated here due to the lack of a real Internet backbone. Seriously though most home users have access to high speed cable (30Mb+ down) or ADSL2+ (24Mb down). Upload speed and dedicated servers have never really been part of the home user landscape. You can also blame companies like Telstra for starting this trend of charging by the MB. :) Like everything though you have to work within the constraints of your own environment and if you don't like it go somewhere else. For example my internet cap is 150GB, but I get access to massive amounts of stuff uncapped (including Steam). I'm not about to advertise the company name but I downloaded over 380GB last cycle and didn't even break the cap. My advice as mentioned above is SHOP AROUND. edit: fixing some typos

Well said, but sadly enough there are people who are either not savvy enough or unaware of the opportunity's that are out there. Like you said, that Telstra is simply r4ging on cost per mb. I wonder what their profit was for 2009 last quater. Also noted what you pointed and couldn't agree with you more, the structure within the au is geared to a more home orientated mbps rather than upgrading their network to handle the high volume that would surely result in the destruction of Telstra. Then again they seem to have a monopoly on it all, but as you said, there's more than one way to skin a cat. (Figure of speech, plz no r4ging that i hate animals) edit: syntax

Just import. As son other said, PayAsia is good pricing. I haven't bought much in Austrlai for some time. At XmAs, I bought everyone's Xmas gifts from imports. This includes Shoes, Clothes, Games, and Electronics. I even got my new LCD TV imported. I lost faith in keeping my money in my country a long time ago.

As for so called modern country's, Australia seems too be full of back wards thinking people when it comes to technology and games rating systems. To say that a game is to violent for adults is just ridiculous.;)

That's going to be a choice for the family, it's not going to be forced upon everyone. Change your internet provider if your on some lousy cap of 20Gb per month. I'm with TPG and for $50 per month I get 120Gb ADSL2, 60Gb peak/60gb offpeak, with a cap of 512k. My only complain about Australia is pricing (looking at you Borderlands, Bioshock, MW2), and the censorship issue.

Games - and the entire entertainment scene, for that matter - are just a tiny facet of what defines the achievements of a country. just because the people don't get to enjoy gore and violence on a computer doesn't mean it's backward. in many ways, it's actually more advanced than, say, canada.
