I'm looking into a new Firewall + A/V solution for my computer and am wondering if I should go with either one of those, I'll be getting a 3PC license for all the 3 computers in my house. Or if I should stay with Windows firewall and get Avast! Free A/V, does it compare to Kaspersky?

I've used mcafee and kaspersky but now I'm using Avast. It's free but as powerful as other antiviruses with those hefty prices.

Been there done that, didn't like it. Avast 5.05's user reviews seems kind of bad, I might get Kaspersky IS 2011.

I am anti-Anti-Virus :P Seriously though, I never use 3rd party Security Software. Have Never needed to. Especially since Win7 & IE8 have been released. The most that I do, if I ever suspect some type of Malware - I'll run Adaware or SuperSypWare. If my PC is beyond those two Programs, I reformat and Reinstall.

However, Since my install of Win7 - I havnt had one real Issue yet? Am I lucky? Maybe - but I also no better than to open Risky emails or Unfamiliar Programs.

But to actually answer ur question - I have Given Most Anti-Virus/Security Softwares out there - and I would probably use AVAST over the rest.

Avast above the rest, seems to use Less resources than all others - while doing a great job catching pesky Bugs. But again-havnt really needed it.

I've gotten a virus while using the Runes of Magic Downloader. It's not just these porn sites or being stupid and dumb. It actually happens to people on a daily basis. Some of you guys are just "lucky."

Avast and Threatfire are my personal choices, neither is perfect individually but together they cover each other's holes pretty well and they work differently so you don't have to worry about conflicts. If i had to pay i think i'ld go for Nod32 or F-Secure.

Vista and 7 are hardly going to protect you much more from viruses than xp. At the end of the day, some viruses cant be avoided, for example, if you go on a dodgy website by accident and it automatically downloads a worm or what ever without you knowing. The safest bet would be to use linux or mac OS

Vista or 7 + mozilla for 4 years, and i download tons of crap and i havnt gotten a single virus. The actual OS for vista and 7 is more secure...take a look at the code sometime.

If you have no anti virus, how can you know that your pc isn't in fact full of malware? Just a thought...

While the windows operating system has been undergoing continual updates against malware, there is much more development in creating the malware because more people use it. A large part of why Windows gets infected with malware is because it attempts to be as user friendly as possible. This makes it much easier for many users who do not know basic computer security to get infected. It also makes it easier because there are many more applications and services which can be exploited.

Linux can be run with a very rigid set of permissions, which make it more secure. Additionally, there are many distributions of Linux, some coming with almost nothing but the kernel and the user installs what he wants. The less there is that could be exploited, the more secure the machine is overall.

I use Kaspersky

The only qualm I have with it is that it increases my boot time by 2 minutes. Performance and level of protection is otherwise outstanding.

You can lighten windows too, i belive there was an app somewhere that would make a light iso from a real disk iso. You can also turn off services manually in windows.

In fact, I have already taken off many services from windows on my laptop and desktop. Unfortunately, many processes need to be continually run in the background in order for many applications to function (won't work on manual settings, which enables when in use).
