Which is the better in terms of free protection? Or is there something else that's even better?

Kaspersky. It isn't free, but it is so far superior to everything else.

No thanks. I just checked it out and you have to pay 40-60 dollars a year to use it.

This or avast! Both are great in my experience. I personally have been using avast! for many years and it has always worked great for me.

Can't say anything about Avast, never used it. However, I have been using Ad-Aware since 2006 and they pickup alot of stuff before said paid anti-virus would. It every once in a while pickups up a false positive, but it is very rare. Other than that, no problems it works in conjuction with my paid AV and Malware Bytes.

Oh really? 12 bucks. It says old version, but the upgrade to 2012 is completely free.

Funny thing is if you're a computer tech you don't actually use anything :P.

Avast... It's free, you don't ever need to pay for an anti virus. Been it since 2005.

Never had a virus or any malware on my computer. No keyloggers, nothing.

Avast has blocked malware and trojans from many sites that I have clicked on by mistake.

Can't go wrong.

AVG is bad.

Norton is garbage.

+1 also avast might offer good protection but i remember horrible UI and popups for adds that constantly ask you to pay.

I also use ad aware to do scans periodically to remove internet garbage it finds stuff nothing else will but i turn off all the passive stuff MSE is great for that

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, it has a small footprint and doesn't cause any lag. Also I sometimes scan with Malwarebytes antimalware program, it sometimes finds things that MSE won't, but some false results which aren't actually a threat of any kind.

MSE has antivirus and malware/spyware and all that combined. It used to be just antivirus and the windows defender was for the spyware but they combined it a while ago... not sure when.

I havent used Avast, but i've heard its really good. I might someday.

I've tried a few. MSE is my fav. Anything else seems like malware really & creates a noticable lag on your system. AVAST would be 2nd if I had to choose one.

Zonealarm Extreme Security, virtualized browser and all downloads are executed in a virtualized environment as well. Plus i've never seen a popup or system slowdown from it and has been rated pretty highly year on year. It's also not that expensive.

Avg was recomended to me a few years back. Been using it ever since. Seems alright to me. Small footprint, no adds and no viruses. Why would u say its bad? That sucks because i just payed for another year.

Motokid6

AVG isnt the best anymore. paid for version is alot better than the free one. i know many folks still use it. i say until you get a noticeable problem. dont change

For the people using Avast AV, or other popular AV, do you install a Firewall software separately or don't bother?

I had Avast and this app would not function properly on my Ainol Novo 7 tablet with Android 4.01 (Ice Cream Sandwich). I know the ranking of this particular company's software would have made it nice to have been able to install. Time will get them there. I switched to ZenOK Free Antivirus and I've been using free antivirus on my home computer for about six months now. Over that time, I've had no issue with protecting my computer from bad guys. So, when I got a new Fire (which I love) I wanted to protect it at the same level that I have been protecting my home computer with. This antivirus wasn't immediately available, but when I saw it I snapped it up. http://www.zenok.com/en/free-antivirus/

MSE, you don't even know it's there.

Scan with malwarebytes every week and you're safe.
