My WoW account was recently hacked, and it was recommend that I install a second AV software.

I chose AVG because I have heard good things, but when I installed it it recommended that I uninstall Norton in order to prevent conflicts.

Is this really necessary? Will it kill my performance or make things worse?

Thanks

there is no need for two antivirus programs, in fact they will conflict with each other and potentially make things worse.

i would definitely not use two AVs, especially the ones you mention, if you have the option to change i would recommend kaspersky internet security suite over those two and, personally, would avoid the free ones like avg

Yeah I don't know. I had AVG and it never picked up anything, so either I never had a virus, or it wasn't detecting them. I do know that Avast has saved me on a couple of occasions. I had switched to Avast. The home edition is free and I think it is just fine.

those are some free ones from cnet that are reccomended and good. i guess since you paid for norton just use that for now but these are some to keep in mind instead of renewing subscription. sorry i didnt read the original post right. but yeah dont install to AV softwares as they'll mess with each other and just make your life miserable. Norton should be fine, i would only suggest maybe switching all your passwords and doing a full scan if you haven't already. also reformating the computer is also an option as a fresh restart makes comp faster and clears any problems.

yes, I plan on buying a new processor and hard drive come christmas so I will be doing everything nice and fresh.

also, I did a full scan about two weeks ago, no signs of critters :( which is disheartening considering I think I got some.

oh well, everything else seems fine

thanks for all the replies, folks. Its funny, blizz support said you can run two at once but I immediately noticed a huuuuge decrease in performance lol

yeah avast and avira is very good. you might want to check out ccleaner for cleaning any unwanted stuff from your system (it's not an av and won't conflict with anything), and if you feel your system is lagging a bit but nothing is wrong run windows defrag, it takes a while if you've never run it but it will help a lot.

This is best setup

AV-- Avira+ ZoneAlarm PRO Firewall 2010 + SUPERAntiSpyware Pro and free at last of bugs

you might also run Micro Trends Hijack This every couple of weeks simply to see what has installed itself on your system

Norton's actually pretty good, if you've got one of the recent versions. By the same benchmark that CNET was saying Avast scored great, Norton scored a little bit better on the scheduled scan's detection rate. Avira has the best detection rate, but at the cost of more false positives than any of the other guys. But yeah, between avira, avast, norton, nod32, kapersky, and from the sound of it MSE, it's hard to go wrong.

Definitely go with 1 antivir.

I use Avira's AntiVir (free edition). Check out AV-comparatives for a comparison of different anti-virus programs. AntiVir has consistently been ranked the top one. Its only problem is there seems to be a lot of false positives. But I never have any problem.

Good luck.

I don't run ANY AV and I have no issues once so ever. Then again if you ever get an account "hacked", it is usually your fault to begin with.

entering your account info in a phishing site is the number 1 way I've seen people get "hacked". I don't even consider that getting hacked because you basically typed your info in and directly gave it to them. It's more social engineering.

second way people usually get hacked on WoW is downloading shady addons, which are usually keyloggers.

AV will most likely fail to detect both.

Read up and compare AVs before diving headlong.... Norton 09 is rated amongst the best AVs out there...( CPU magazine, etc) Using less memory , best protection, etc Blowing Avast , AVG ( free and paid ) Kapernsky etc out of the water.... If a virus got through Norton ...it's your fault...

I hate Norton because I've only had issues with it from the start. I was finally convinced by my step-father to just get AVG. It's not the best, but what I do on Windows doesn't require a beast of an AV because I typically just play video games and browse the internet, on a few sites. I do more of my downloading on the OS X because of the lack of viruses that can actually infect my system...although...the number is increasing :/
