Wizard 101 is supposed to be a pretty good one. It's more of a family/kids-oriented MMO, but it has over 5 million players now according to the latest reports.
Unfortunately, that's not the case in all situations.
Gang Garrison 2 is a free-to-play 2D version of Team Fortress 2 with a retro NES-style theme. And yes, it's online. How can anybody say that's not awesome?

I actually tried that game out since my girlfriend was playing it already. It was fun battling with her and random people can jump into the battles with you too. Quests are done individually though and the battles are turn based with cards... so it got boring pretty quick when she wasn't around :P It's worth a look though.
