recently installed windows 7 from xp and i backed up my files to maxtor external drive which win 7 said was compatible and now its saying that windows cannot find a backup device. Its connected and on and the drive is reading the files are on there but i can't restore them. Also why does it keep an old windows log of all my files if I can't access them or restore them, just takes up space on my drive with duplicate programs that can't be used...dumb!

did you manually cut and paste the files to the external drive or did you use the useless windows backup utility?

you should be able to go to backup and restore Open Backup and Restore by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Backup and Restore. And then tell it the file to look at and choose restore files.

Does the drive with your files on it show the actual files or the image in which XP created that holds your files? If it's only showing files then simply copy them over.

I'm cutting and pasting from the old windows file to the new one and having mixed results. I get some data back and not others. But at least i'm getting some of it back. If i'm pasting to an installed program its 50/50 but if i'm just pasting to the program folder it seems to work. I think maybe the backup drive may be bad or the win restore isn't working. when I open the drive to view the files it says it can't open them, i should be able to see the files right?
