Would 2142 run smoothly with 2gb of ram, dual core, and a Geforce 8600 ? Also, what are some of the major differences? I tried the Battlefield 2 demo a while ago, I thought it was quite good. I was a fan of battlefield 1942. I'm just wondering what the differences are.... and I'm not a huge fan of pretty futuristic games, so as long as the games not based around robots and laser guns and all, it's fine.Zaeryn
Of course you will be able to max it with those specs. Try the 2142 demo to see what it's like. Both are great games but I no longer play Battlefield 2 since I got 2142. It will take you forever to get the Battlefield 2 unlocks at this point.
If you like the future then get battlefield 2142 but if you like moderm combat then battlefield 2. There is a lot more people playing battlefield 2 then battlefield 2142.Private_AdamFuture-istic would be cool, as long as it's not something like Halo... never enjoyed that series. I'm just looking for the more quality fps, not the one that's going to please my eyes the most.

I cant max it with a 7600GT. COnsidering that BF2 barely relies on a CPU and the 7600GT is on par with the 8600GT(Unless that is he's talking about the 8600GTS)I'm pretty sure he wont be able to max it out with a good avg framerate.
Anyway play both demos, but id say go with BF2. It has a much larger community,(people still play the demo to this day. Look at the BF2142 demo, almost no one plays it anymore) more mods, and is just more fun in general IMHO.
Actually the 8600 does well in BF2142, if anything. Here:

The 8600gt beats an x1950 pro in BF2142. I play the demo maxed at 1280 with an x2 3800+, 2GB ram and get around 50-80fps.
I like certain aspects of 2142 very much but decided to get BF2 instead for a number of reasons.

yes, it will max...I can almost max either game with a similair rig (only I have a 7600GT).
BF2 is a modern combat online FPS, and as a result its depiction of war is grounded in reality. You have a medic, a sniper, assault, engineer, AT soldier, special forces, and I think one or two more classes. There are no real suprises here, its just basic "capture the spawn point" combat with vehicles. Unlocks are handled an a class basis, meaning each rank you get one or two unlock options giving you access to new guns, and thats about it.
BF2142 takes place in a theoretical war in the year 2142. Because of this, the developers were given more freedom. Weapons are fairly believable but also very creative. There are two huge differences between BF2 and BF2142.
First, BF2142 has an amazing game mode call Titan Mode. While there are spawn points to capture, there is also a ginormous floating base called a titan. At each capture point there is a missile launcher, and the goal is to capture the launcher so that the shields get warn down and you can either board the titan and blow it up, or whittle away at its hull with the missiles.
Second, the unlock system is more of a "tree" system in that each rank gives you access to a new skill, but if you want a higher level skill you need to unlock the prerequisites. For example, the basic assault tree has two braches: one is a medic branch in which you first get access to a defibrilator, a healing kit, and eventually a fast firing gun; the other branch is a heavy assault where you get access to a shotgun and grenade addon, and eventually a really nice assault rifle.
BF2142 has four clazzes in all, and each clazzhas two branches.
-Assault has the medic or heavy assault option
-Recon has the sniper or spec ops option
-Engineers have an antiground and antiair vehicle branch (antitank rifle rules, by the way!)
-Support has the heavy machinegunner or the defense option (i think)
The great thing is that you can pick and choose from each branch. So, for example, if you want to be a deadly medic, you can choose 2 of the medic options and then max out the heavy assault soldier options and get a beefy assault rifle that has a grenade launcher that shoots small rocket grenades! It offers a lot of flexibilty and a lot of fun.
To answer your original question, I recommend BF2142. It seems just a whole lot more innovative even though the fundamentals havent changed. And BF2142 has walkers, which are simply amazing (and a hovertank, my favorite).
I'll just tell you some of the weaknesses that I dispise of bothbecause others alreadydid the pros.
BF2: Everyoneimmediately goes prone upon seeing each other and who ever can plink the other one first from that position wins. It turns into amassive prone battle where everyone ishopping around and going prone in mid air. Not only do Ifind that unrealistic it just detracts from the fun because it turns into who can go prone faster.
Grenade spammers seem to bemuch more prevelent in this game than BF2142 as well.
There are some weapons that are just absurdly more powerful than others.
BF2142: Artillery almost ruins the gamebecause its constantly raining down everywhere.
Vehicles are alot more useless becauseeveryone has the ability to take them out almost.
The fact that there are a lot of ranks and what not makes some people more centered on ranking up and getting unlocks than actual teamplay. This is not alwaystrue but sometimes.
Just remember that you'll find more people and servers on BF2 then on 2142.

Battlefield 2. More patches (usually means refined gameplay, but for DICE games it means less [noticable] bugs), more players and mods are coming out for it. If you want to play mods, download PoE. Pirates and Forgotten Hope will come out eventually if they arent out yet.food4mePatch to patch, BF2142 kicks the living hell out of BF2. Pretty much anybody that actually owns both games will agree that 2142's patches were miles better than what went on with 2 - and as far as fully-patched state goes, 2142's in much better shape. I do think there'll be just about zero mod support for 2142, though.
