I have around £500 to spend on my pc and have an idea what i`m wanting but have a few questions.

What i have....

AMD Phenom X2 550 Black Edition 3.3GHz
Sapphire 790GX Socket AM3 DDR3
OCZ 4GB Kit 1333
Corsair 650W PSU
Western Digital 500GB SATA II
Sapphire HD 4850 512MB (crossfire)

ASUS HD 4850 512MB (crossfire)

Windows vista home 32

Arctic freezer pro 7 rev 2

What i`m looking at..

i5 2500k

p68 mobo

8 gig ram

gtx 560 ti

windows 7 64

Questions..

Will it be worth waiting for ivy bridge? will it be the same price as the current chip?

8gig vs 4 gig ram and can i use my current ram?

looking for a sub £200 gfx card, gtx 560 ti vs 6950 (theres about £30-£40 difference)

Upgrade os now or wait for windows 8? (i know my os limits me to 3 gig ram)

I have decided to upgrade now as i`m having a horrible time with crossfire and dont see the point of upgrading just the gfx on this system , plus there is a few games out this year that i want to enjoy playing.

For gaming? The 2500 is plenty good enough--no need for Ivy Bridge unless you're an enthusiast rich guy. You won't see any difference between 4 and 8 Gig or with higher RAM speeds. Use your old RAM. I dunno, six of one, but it seems to me that Nvidia has hired some actual software guys lately to write their drivers instead of the way they used to stamp out cards like car parts and send them out the door with a CD made up by the marketing department, hoping somebody would make them work in a computer. In other words, I'd get the 560Ti by default. Many would disagree. I like to wait until the gamma testing is over before I jump into a new OS. I'd get 7 now. You might want to think about getting new pins and whatever for the cooler.

Thanks for your advice, you have confirmed my thoughts (dont bother waiting) Yup, gaming and web browsing/films only. The cooler is still in the packaging, i bought it to overclock my current system then decided just to upgrade. Thanks again.

dont use your old ram.

youll want a motherboard supporting ddr3 which isnt backwards compatible to ddr2.

some of the p68 mobos are pretty old now and dont support the newer techs such as ddr3, sata3 and usb3.

Yes, its DDR3 ram i have, just didnt know if it was wise to go from 1333 to 1600.

I`m not sure set on the board yet p68 was the first that poped into my head when i was typing.

going from 1333 to 1600 you will see next to zero performance improvement.

I definitely would upgrade the OS. Win 8 isn't anywhere near ready, and you may not have a reliable OS for at least 2-3 years. Windows 7 is fine. As far as 560ti vs 6950... go for whichever one is cheaper. Both have good driver support, and performance is on the same level.
