If you are GOOD enough, I mean really good, you can make high double digits, and if you are amazing, you can even make triple digits. There aren't any official "pro" gamers, since you are payed by the tournaments , and not by any company, and you are still counted as "unemployed" if that is your only job.
Basically its not just you, but your whole team. You have to have a kickass team (unless you are playing RTS or some FPS) to be able to win. You basically just keep winning tournaments until you are recognized and are given an invite to a larger nationwide tournament.
The majority of the "pro gamer" play only one game, but they play it to the mmm "perfection". I remember the korean, who won the 1 million $ Starcraft or Age of Empire 2 tourney( sorry make a long long time it happened), was saying that he was playing the game atleast 10 hours a day for the last 4-5 years. I doubt you will make a lot of money from these tourney, they happen rarely and even more rarely if you concentrate yourself on a single game.

a recent PC Gamer had an article on the top Starcraft players in Korea. They are roomed in small sweatshop-esque places and they play Starcraft continuously for 12 hours a day; they only have one month holiday a year. Many do not make double, triple digit salaries, there are only two well-known Starcraft players who make that much.

We live in a crazy world.
I wouldn't consider myself a Pro Gamer in any way...I'm rather more a casual Online Gamer. There was no need of calling me a nerd!Seamo24

yes i read that article and it doesn't seem worth it as even if u do make it big and make a ton of money u cant really do much with it as u will spend the majority of the time playing what ever game ur pro at so u never can get to enjoy it. ifa nything forget about becoming a pro gamer.
[QUOTE="DeathStar17"]And if you try to be a pro gamer and fail, have fun being homeless...Seamo24
Whom are u talkin to???
Why are you so jumpy when anyone says something negative about it?
Go ahead try and be a pro gamer, we will all laugh as you fail and get beat by south koreans who play 12hrs a day.
You would need a 2nd job to keep playing.

Thats what i'm annoyed about...I said it about 3 or 4 times that I'm not planning on being a Pro Gamer  and I don't wanna beat any koreans!! All I wanted to know is if there were any Pro Gamers at Gamespot and what it takes to be one and IF it makes money. (I didn't say it does!!)

Don't worry about it Seamo, some people just can't read. "Pro gameing" if you can justify that as a job, is nothing more then a few lucky individuals or teams who go to tournements after torumenents and continously win. Eventually if your noticed, some sort of company based around the gaming scene will perhaps sponsor you. Sponsorship only means that you may get some free items and or free travel to the events.(depends on contract)
The only money you can make from "Por gaming" is the tornements (or atlest thats all I have ever heard anyone making moeny from) and even then, thats not a sure thing.
Other then that, I guess you could try moving to S. Korea or China and become a gold farmer in hopes to steal moeny from lazy MMOer's.
Its not even about the money, almost any "pro" gamer will tell you this. Its about getting as much skill as possible out of the game, having personal rivalries. Now I am only talking about the 1v1 DM scene as that is all I really keep up with.
Playing a game 8hrs+ a day is fun, it can get tedious and granted there will be times when you feel burnt out. But knowing that I am still not the best, or even just a top player drives me to play more and more. It drives me to become better, smarter, faster and just very well rounded in all games rather than just one.
Anything that you want to become good at will take dedication. granted being a pro gamer isnt for everyone and I'm not saying thats its the best in the world.
Korea took it a step further and made it big. Only for RTS of course. But I would love to see Quake 1v1 as popular as that. Granted it did get popualr back around 2002-2004. But it died out mostly, even though there is still a community for it.
So basically being a pro gamer is just about dedication and knowing that you have acheived what most others couldnt say. Its about a personal gain rather than a money hungry thing. But now if your not good enough then ya, you will definitely need a second job besides gaming. You should never give up your life to try to become pro. Its just about taking the time to play and eventually you will get there, if not o-well.
Most pro's play through their college years, so its not like they have much else to do. If you love the game you would want to get skilled at it, After getting skilled you probably want to show it off, and what a better way then to go to a tourney, meet some of the online ppl you play with and see who is better on LAN ping.
Gaming is about fun, using skilled, well balanced games for competition just takes the fun that much further. Money is just so that you can pay for the traveling, food and living. I play for fun, I really enjoy quake, and I see how much skill there is in the game, why not play as much as i can to get better at it. After all its human nature to be competitive. =)

Hey I said the same thing with fewer words! ;) But yeah nice response there.I think one's chances of becoming a successful "pro gamer" are about as good as becoming a rock star. On a side note, I remember playing 1 v 1 Duke Nukem, Quake and Blood ladder matches when I was in to competitive gaming. Now if I play online FPS its just for fun.
If you wanted to make money with video games you'd be better served becoming a programmer or something in the graphic arts department.
