I'm just curious because I am interested in playing more games for the pc. I bought a pretty descent pc that will run any new game yet I have only bought ME2 just today. Can someone give me some reasons to stay optimistic about pc gaming. Some people say it is dead and I just want to hear from regular pc gamers.

dedicated servers on most multiplayer games, which give a better gaming experience than the usual P2P stuff on consoles.

Usually (not always) a more mature community than people on consoles

The ability to modify most games. Good examples would be games that Valve and bethesda make.

Keyboard and mouse are better than a controller for almost all genres (imo)

Better gfx than consoles

Some really good exclusives (usually RTS)

Cheaper than consoles

Games have far greater longevity on the PC than on consoles.

"PC gaming is dead!" is complete BS. If it was, Steam would be out of business by now, as would Xfire, Direct2Drive, and all other digital distributors of games. ;) Off the top of my head, the great things about PC gaming are, in no particular order: *MODS! Mods, mods, mods! Completely free of charge you can modify your games, you can patch out bugs the developers didn't bother worrying about with fan-made patches, and you can add content to your PC games at your whim. It's gone to the point where if I know a developer has a reputation for buggy games, I buy them for the PC and then wait a few months before playing them. The modding community has fixed the bugs by then. *Free online. You already had an internet connection, now you can use it for games. :) *Cheap. PC games don't have to pay royalty fees to console owning companies, and you already have a computer because you need one anyway.

I agree with everything except that. PC gaming can be done on the cheap, but you can't expect to get decent performance on a cheap rig with games 2 years from now, while the graphics on console games will keep improving over the years even though you'll be using one piece of hardware that you only have to upgrade every 5 years or so.

PC gaming is far from dead man, sometimes its hard to find people in your area that have gaming PC's like I only have one freind that has a gaming PC and he usually plays RPG's and or MMo's he has an xbox as well but that was due to my other 10 freinds all have xbox 360. Sometimes it sucks not having immediate freinds to play PC games with but Counterstrike adn TF2 all have great communities and its easy to get along with people. Plus there are funny mods and what not, so stay in there PC gaming is awesome, i play on both consoles and a PC, and PC really has its upsides.

I prefer PC gaming, the only thing PC gaming lacks is comfort and social interaction. If only someone creates a chair that feels like your on the couch/sofa. And when friends come over for a game session, then PC gets tricky.
PC gaming is not dying, it's only because Sony and Microsoft spend megabucks advertising the consoles. Developers can make more money from PC gaming now. On console you buy a new game, play it and trade it in. Then someone else buys your tradein copy. The dev does not see any money from that tradein sale. This is one reason new release console games are so expensive.

My bad for not mentioning this. The number of indie games on PC is way, way larger than the number of indie games on console. :)

if your into simulation type games (fsx, lomac, dcs blackshark, arma etc) then pc is the only place to be, and of course mods prolong the life of any game you so desire

I should have been a bit more specific. I meant the games themselves are cheaper than their console counterpart.

I think the great prices is one of the best benfits, if you wait awhile you can get ridiculous deals on games.

4. It's easier to pirate games. If you buy a console game and find out that it's horrible then you're out 60 benjamins. Pirating allows PC gamers to try out a game before buying it.

da_bomb123

There's a lot of good, legal alternatives to pirating to find out if a game is any good: downloading demos, reading reviews, watching gameplay videos. I think being forced to steal to find out if a game is any good is more of a downside, if anything... consoles all have robust rental markets for people who are unsure about purchasing games (plus their games are easier to resell). I don't want to turn this into a piracy thread or anything, but the difficulty of protecting copyrights harms the future of our platform and has no positive side effects.

Contributing to the thread: PCs are the easiest way to setup a 3D gaming rig. Coupled with an NVidia card, you only need 3D Vision ($175) and a good 120Hz monitor ($300).

Also backwards compatability!

I agree with this except for the maturity thing. If you've ever played L4d2 with the general community you'll know thats not true. it fuels a stereotype that consoles are just for kids which is bs.
