I have about that much to spend. Possibly a little more.

- Must be 1080p

- Preferably 40 inches or larger

- If possible, 120hz

- No obscure off brands

This will be almost exclusively a Blu-ray / Gaming display and will likely never have HD satelite or cable connected to it.

Im more concerned with overall picture quality than i am with pointless or gimmick features. Good color production and excellent dark levels are also a must. Thanks in advance.

The Samsung would provided a cleaner image. Panasonic Plasma's have terrible picture noise when viewing content that is NOT Blu Ray or videogames because the noise reduction feature is useless. You'll be forced to use Cinema mode since that's the only picture mode that looks clean with correct gamma. It also has a red push that you can't get rid of even after having it professionally calibrated. Don't get me wrong. Cinema is fine but what sucks is that you customize it with each input. You also have to worry about image retention and burn-in. The viewing angles aren't as great on the Samsung but unless you're sitting to the sides of the TV, you'll never notice. In the end, the Panasonic has a great picture but too many flaws along with only 3 HDMI inputs.

The only problem with that article is that it's comparing a Samsung Plasma vs a Panasonic Plasma. Either way, you'll be happy with either the Samsung Plasma or LCD.

I do not see this noise and I dont use the noise reduction. The picture looks very natural. That Panasonic in its THX setting is compared to the Pioneers. Dont know what else to say.......

According to Cnet:

The good: The Panasonic TH-50PZ85U can produce one of the deepest shades of black we've ever tested; it has punchy color; a relatively effective antireflective screen; and sleek styling.

The badThe bad:Poor noise reduction; less-accurate primary colors; fewer picture controls than many HDTVs.

Again. not the same model. Cnet will always have something bad to say. The one I suggested is the TH-46PZ800U not the 85U and again, I see no noise. maybe I just have a really good source? If there is no noise to reduce then I guess this point is mute. Why are you always bashing plasma's? You dont have to defend your decision to switch from them. Its your money, buy whichever one you want, but the idea of this thread is to give suggestions not bash the ones others give. This is not the Plasma vs. LCD thread. You are right though. The OP will be happy with any of the suggestions here.

The 800u's picture is exactly the same as the PZ85. The only difference is that it features a THX mode which most people don't like in the first place. The Samsung PN50A650 has a better picture than the 800u and is cheaper so why bother recommending the 800u? BTW, how am I always bashing Plasma's? I recommended the PN50A650 a few posts back. Stop being so anal just because someone rejects a Panny Plasma.

Off the topic now, but do you have a link to the info stating that the 800U and the 85U are the same. Just wondering for my own curiosity. Thanks

Im leaning towards the 46inch Panny plasma at the moment. I know its not that much of a problem anymore but i have a habit of playing games for extremely prolonged periods of time and having static images on screen for 12+ hours at a time concerns me a little bit.

I know as far as the Bluray playback that i want a top notch plasma over a top notch LCD, while im not sure if there are any direct and blatant drawbacks to gaming on a plasma over an LCD.

Unless someone changes my mind im probably going to wait until january and dig deep enough to get the 50inch viera. Pound for pound it looks to be the best bargain.

the only games I have heard you might have a bit of a problem are games like GH where there are bars on the screen all the time but if you are going to be watching movies and playing other games aswell I don't think you will have a problem.

I play alot of driving games and I have never had a problem because once the race is over the screen spends enough time wiping the speedo off with all the cut scenes and the like, and I play for hours at a time to

You should be fine if you go through the 100 hour break in period. You will LOVE Blu-ray movies on it. Incredible.
