Tax time is coming around and I want to upgrade my 8800gt. What should I be looking into? Dont want to spend more than $225. I have a monster of a PSU also. I am also getting a 1080p monitor, so high res performance is important.

Normally I just look myself, but i've been out of the hardware part of the PC world so long im lost.

you could also wait since the GTX295 is coming out next month the GTX280 prices are going to drop for sure then you could get something better thats just my opinion if not go for the GTX260 216 core

It'll be interesting to see how much the new 295 will cost. I'm guessing in excess of $400. Then we can see how much the 280 would go down. I suppose if you want to go easy on the cash, wait for the 295, and just get the 280 when the price goes down. The 260 is still good, but if the 280 goes down to an affordable price, you might as well snatch it up.

Im going to pick up a 260 thursday. The 4870 is a nice card stock vs stock it beats the 260. But after reading about 20 reviews one thing stands out. Overclocking on the 260 is much much better. And i'm a big overclocker. Hopefully I don't kill it.

Thanks for the help guys.

I would agree if I was going to be playing games at my current res, but I won't be. I'll be playing all my games @ 1080p 8800gt won't cut it in some of the more taxing games I have. And its not like $200 is alot. Only reason I even have the 8800GT (I've had it idleing at 74C the last 6 months, like 102C load.) still is because I can't kill it.

Killed my 9800 pro, then a 6800 ultra, and a 7900gtx right after that. Hopefully I kill off the 260 and it gives me an excuse to upgrade again.

wow. 102c?? i didn't know it could operate tha hot

but you really shouldnt have a problem with the GTX 260, it overclocks like a beast, mine was 576mhz stock core clock, i have her running at 750mhz now:)

(I'm still testing for stability, thought i had it at 771mhz, but it crashed, and idk if it was my cpu or the gpu cuz it didnt give me a blue screen, it just locked up)

so is it a bad time to upgrade?

i have a BFG 8800GT and i want to upgrade to this

would it be a good buy? i will save $80 plus what ever Farcry 2 is. or would it be better to wait and see what the GTX 295 does.

i would say go with evga, they have 90 step up program, so if you like the way the 295 is looking then you can get that, and they come with farcry 2 as well

Honestly, i would get another (9)8800gt and run it in sli if possible. If not then hold your horses for few weeks and wait for prices to drop.

Wow. Does my 8800GT like suck horribly now? Should I think about upgrading or should I wait another year? Sorry to highjack this thread but man I just got the thing last year and its ram looks like it cannot compete.

its hard to say how much the prices will drop, i've been asking the same question, all i get is, well we know they'll drop, so i just bought the cpu i was waiting for, i guess if its what you want, and its a good deal for the time, you might as well just get it, as long as your happy with it.

Well don't buy a new graphics card just because its prices drop...they are only going to drop more and more. Buy a new graphics card when you need more performance!
