I'm planning to build a new computer, and the only thing I'm debating about is the videocard. I'm having a hard time figuring out what the best budget video card out there is currently.

My budget is around $100 dollars for the GPU. I'm going to be building a gaming PC, but not so crazed up on framerates. Just want to be able to run Cod4, L4D, TF2, etc at around high or smoothly. Any suggestions?

benchmark links or newegg links would be helpful after recommending a card.

thanks in advance!

well, according to newegg, the best rated card right now is the Radeon HD 4830 512mb. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102822

but, coming from personal experience, the 9800GTX+ card is much better, for only 20 more dollars. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339

How's the 4770 better? because I noticed that it's running 128-bit compared to the 4830 which runs it at 256 bit

It does run GDDR5 compared to the GDDR3 in 4830 but does that make that much of a difference? From what I hear anything past GDDR3 doesn't make significant differences right now, or am I wrong?

its increases the memory bandwidth so it doesn't need a 256-bit bus to utilize the 512mb of memory.

It's 40nm, so it should overclock way better than the 4830. Anyways, the next-gen cards (GT300 series from nVidia, and HD4900 series from ATI) are coming out July-August, so I suggest you wait till then. Rumours say the cheapest card will be 60% faster than the GTX 295:shock:

The GDDr5 makes a difference thats why the 4870 is better than the 4850. The 4770 pretty much outperforms the 4830 in nearly all situations and actualy comes closer the the 4850.

HD 4770, wins easily,

  • due to to the easy bandwidth achived by the 128-bit bus scored with the GDDR5 memory which makes 256-bit bus on the card helpful. but not needed.
  • 40nm process which allows for cooler overclocking, i have seen configs with 900/1000, which easily trumps the 4850 and rears up on the 4870.
  • Crossfire/Overclock two of these puppies and you have a monster; Beats the 4870 comes up on the 4890 and is tie with the GTX 285

If this is not 2009's budget card of the year then, just wow...

The core 216 GTX 260 and 4770 seem to be the budget cards of choice at the moment...

You funny guy! Where did you read that?, Fudzilla? I can tell you it´s more of a lie and probably not a roumor.
