I'm looking for a card ideal for a 17" 1024x764 res. I know that I can spend loads and 'futureproof', but what would suit that res now?

What's your budget? Anyway, the 4830 is probably the best card for the money right now since it's around 100$ or you could go with the 9800GT which is slightly worse but possibly you could get it for less(doubt it but it's possible)

ah but an 8800 or 3870 is slightly cheaper and the preformance is only a mild step down.

I would just get the best one you can get your hands on tbh, getting one for a certain res would be kinda difficult, just set yourslef a limit and get the best you can :) I have an 8800 which I love if that helps.

Why don't you include the 4830? Probably the best choice IMO. A 4830 or a 3870. Bang for your buck.

3870's pretty good. 4830 is awesome(for its price). but really anything mainstream will work, i.e. nvidia's 9600's and ati's 4670s..... 1024x764 isnt really a demanding resolution so you dont need a 4870 or gtx 285............ If your a ati dude, look at the 3870 or 4830. if your a nivida dude, look at a 8800 or 9800.

Maybe I'll just go for a low-ender like a 4670/9600 gt but get a real nice cpu. I can always easily upgrade the gfx card in a year .

No, get the 4830 since it's the same price as the 4670 and it beats the 9800gt and def beats the 9600gt. If you just have to get NVIDIA go with the 9800gt then

No in UK 4670 half price of 4830! But I think I'll just go with a 4850.

By the way I think you should know that a 17" monitor has a naitive resolution of 1280x1024 or 1440x900. Depending if it's widescreen or not.

Whichever brand you decide on just make sure it has at least 512mb of vid memory. I play at 1024x768 on my 17" monitor and didn't have a problem until I tried running GTA4. It sucks video memory like you wouldn't believe. I get good frame rates, but my old G80 8800GTS only has 320mb of memory and that prevents me from turning up the eye candy. Me so sad...

But the Palit 4850 is only £115. Which is better value for money? Also take into account that the mobo I'm planning to get has crossfire compatibility.

you can get the 3870, mine works great on 12x10 i can run pretty much every game on max, ME, Prince of Persia, FO3,... 3870 can even run Prince of persia, assasin creed and the new burnout on 19x10(my second monitor) which is pretty good for the price

Well in that case with the CF mobo definitely get the Palit 4850 and then you could get another one later on and have almost the performance of a single gtx280! (4850>>>>>>>>>>9800gt)
