My friend's looking for a new GFX card.

Now, his computer uses an AGP slot, and I'm more familiar only with the current day cards.

His PSU has 10A on the 12V rail.

What would be the best card for him?

Thanks for the help!

The best card would be the AGP version of the ATI 3850. He may need to upgrade his PSU though.

What are the specs of his computer? I'm guessing that since it uses AGP, his computer is so old that putting a new graphics card in won't really do any good.

Well, good point.

I believe he had an Intel Pentium Dual Core...

Scratch that, he has an Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.8 GHz.

I guess the specs may be old too that PSU with 10A @+12V sounds really old wouldn't have adequate power for today's GPUs

Well, he has an onboard chipset. I'm pretty sure he would like a decent upgrade from that chipset.

Pentium2.8Ghz single core. He's not going to play anything too demanding like Crysis.

The best card is a ATI HD3850 AGP. It's pricey for AGP compared to PCIe. Then there is X1950pro AGP cards which aren't bad either.

What games does he play that might help in the choice?

Quit recommending him high-end cards, he doesn't need them at all. Something like the HD2600Pro would be the safe bet, but 10a on the +12v rail is really low.

Those cards aren't high end. X1950pro is like £60. I got one in an old computer Pentium4.

He won't plan to play Crysis in the first place.

He know's the computer's old, and I'm assuming he wants a semi-temporary graphics card until he can get a new PC.

For a Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz it's rather overkill, and for a power supply with 10a on the +12v rail it's hugely overkill. The X1950Pro may not be a high-end graphics card, but it's more high-end comparatively than say, a Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz.

Not really. Got an X1950pro on the 3GHz pentium4.

That has been covered, we already established that that PSU is inadequate, you may wish to go recap over the thread for that info.

I must have missed the post where it was stated whether or not the power supply was confirmed to be a standard ATX unit. With a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 and AGP slot that puts him back in the days where some companies used proprietary power supplies and/or Micro-ATX units. We have no idea if the power supply is even upgradeable, and if it's honestly worth the upgrade. Since it has been mentioned that the card is temporary and I'm having trouble finding X1950Pro AGP cards in the UK, I say he stick with a safer bet like an HD2600/X1600/7600 card. And I stand by that.

You're not here to compete with me. He will still need a PSU in my opinion whichever card he gets.

That would be my advice as well, but we don't know if that power supply can be upgraded.

Thanks guys!

I think I should just tell him to go ahead and get a new PC... or build one.

7600 GT APG might be good. Also a 6600 gt if you can find it cheaper on ebay or in the clearence bins. ( I saw a 6600 gt for 50 or 60 dollars in a clearence bin )
