So I built my computer from scratch a while back with a 7950GT, 1.8GHZ core 2 duo processor and 2GB DDR2 800 ram. I love this computer but recently I nticed that when playing COD4, and other games, it is a bit choppy on random occasions. I had the graphics pumped all the way up but kept the resolution at 1280X800 instead of my monitors true resolution of 1680X1050. At first I thought it was just my comp not being good enough, which still may be the case, to play the game so I had the game reset to the "optimized" setting which were basically all the way down, but no matter how low the resolution or the graphics settings, the game played the same, again with virtually NO visible performance change. My question is, is all this because of my processor being a bottleneck to my graphics card or is there some other explanation. If this is the case, what is the best processor to fit and work best with my 7950GT 256MB?

newer games are RAM hogs...

try boosting your memory first from 2g+.

Are you even serious with that.Go see some memory benchmarks on gamespot. No game HAS EVER utilized more than 2 GB of ram.I dont understand why is this such a big misconception in these forums.:|

The choppy framrates on random occasions could be lack of airflow in your case (overheating of your components). You could also try updating your drivers.

Do you mean that you dont improve FPS even on low settings.IF that's the case then something is wrong.

What is your procesesor exactly.I dont really see any bottleneck in your PC.

I mean there is a LITTLE and i stress the word LITTLE increase in FPS but not enough to make me want to play on the lower graphics. basically it seems like the problem isnt based on graphic ouput alone but my CPU is an Intel 1.8Ghz processor with an 800Mhz FSB...........I dont truly know what the front side bus deal is but anyways thats it. i have been hearing that vista makes all games kinda choppy like that even with good GPUs. is that true? oh and the choppiness is most easily noticed when i look from right to left with the mouse, its like it locks up for a second but it doesnt always do it........

Google it and you will find PC wizard which is a good tool to see temps.

I dont think that your CPU bottlenecks your GPU but lower resolutions are actually more CPU intensive so you never know but really you should be fine with that CPU.Do you have the latest drivers for the GPU and try defraging the HDD.

What performance are you exactly getting in COD4.Download fraps to see that if you dont have it already. And how much AA do you put and make sure that you have not changed any setting in your driver settings in a way that would affect performance.

I run cod4 in 12x10 everything maxed out with 4xAA and can sometimes go as low as 35fps.

ok i get about between 22 and 24 fps even in heat of battle.....not great but anyways it seemed slower with fraps running....like al ot slower. but i have the AA at 4x which might be a factor. i just have the tendency to crank everything up lol

Lower your resolution and turn off AA, and see how it performs.

Always remember that resolution and AA hvae a drastic affect on performance. You card has 256MB ram that's why it couldnt handle the AA.But i think that PC can still last you some time.
