I'm looking for the best quality video format to compile all my DVD movies into my media center PC. The video doesn't need to be compressed, it just has to play in Media Player and to be a single file. My main goal is to maintain the best picture. Any suggestions?

So .mkv would give me a sharper cleaner picture than mp4? What compression settings should I use for converting. The program I have is DVDFab 5.

Unfortunately I've converted a movie using all these formats and none of them remain identical to VOB. At the highest quality setting, I see blocky video in the blacks and reds.

My goal is to get all my movies into single files rather than multiple VOBs and retain the exact same quality as a standard DVD or better.

If space isn't an issue you can tell your dvd ripping program to not split the vob files. Then you will have one large vob file. Most dvd ripping programs cut the vob file into 1gig chunks for size management.
