Depends on what you want. All these are great i think but in different areas.
Doom3, Horror/sci fi.
Fear, Cool john woo action.
Half Life 2, a nice action ride.
Call Of Duty 2, ww2 action.
Painkiller, Shoot at everything that moves in every level before moving on.
Halo 2.............................NOT!
Well u should try Far cry. Old game but stilll looks gorgeous in my next gen eyes.
Bioshock. D'uh. But not for everyone.
Fear. Spooky and intense at the same time. Its got a nice expansion pack too.
Half Life 2. If u havent played it, then get the orange box. u'll be getting a one bundle of joy there.
there is no single greatest fps, but here's some you should check out:
half life - a greata ction scifi shooter with pretty awesome (at the time) ai, smooth combat with enemies that are just cool, and a lot of great cinematic-style (compared with the standards of the time) moments
half life 2 - a game which transends the genre 'fps', the actual shooting of it is almost incidental, this is a game where instead of just your location and enemies changing as you progress, the entire focus of gameplay changes, you're never doing the same thing too long, so it never stagnates - focus is not on gunplay as much as traditional fps games
escape from butcher bay - easily amongst the greatest games ever made, it merges many forms of gameplay (from shooting to stealthing to fisticuffs to roleplaying) into one neat package, and it handles every moment perfectly - another game which transcends the mere label 'fps'
call of duty 1 & 2 - i have not played 1, but i include it because the general consensus is it is better than 2, but i love 2! the games are high action ww2 run n gunnery with lots of enemies, and lots of ai allies, you almost never feel like a one man army, you're a cog in a machine - and that is more refreshing, and more awesome, than you can imagine before playing it
system shock 2 - a masterpiece that everyonemust play
bioshock - an inferior (though great) update of system shock 2, retaining many of the elements that made shock 2 awesome, improving some, destroying some others
f.e.a.r - simply the best firefights you can have in a computer game, great visuals, the best ai ever, and slow motion
alien vs predator - if you love the aliens and/or predator franchise, you'll love this game - it's essentially a run n gun, stealther and horror game all rolled up into three awesome campaigns
no one lives forever - i very cool and often surprisingly funny first person shooter
doom compilation - set it to ultraviolence, grab your shotgun and rock, amongst the best games ever made
deus ex - i personally hate this game, but i acknowledge it as a great achievement... try it, if you don't enjoy it, you lose a couple bucks, if you love it, it'll change your life
thief 1 & 2 - two games i also don't like, but they are super original and very cool stealth fps games
farcry - another game i don't like, but it's legally free now (it is so long since developers did this, it's almost confusing to have free games again), free = great
there's more, i'm sure, but these are the ones i can remember, and consider utterly essential to any person who considers him or herself a fps fan
All the good fps games are extremely old and everyone has played them at least 2 times ... I don't see anything good coming out for a long time either, the pc is turning into a friggin mmo machine.BounceDK
Stalker came out this year.

Damn. Well done.
So it sounds like Half-Life 2 is a good way to go. I have mostly been a PS2 gamer and I try to play my PSP more than I used to. But now I'm trying to get more into PC gaming and I'm in college so I just got a new computer with a lot of good specs. and I have my computer with me most of the time as well. I dont want to play games in class or anything I'm just saying. I was just wondering if Half-Life 2 is a good PC game and FPS to play for a somewhat new PC gamer like me or what else might be?PS2Dude89
half life 2 is a must play for pc, also doom 3, Far cry and FEARcodemaster44
I completely agree with these suggestions but I would be bold enough to also suggest Quake 4 if you like Doom 3 and the FEAR expansion if you like FEAR. Oh, and Half-Life 1 is still awesome even though its kinda old. The best FPS I've ever played would still be The Ultimate Doom, But thats a personal taste thing...
I agree... and Far Cry looks next gen by any standards, especially if you turn on HDR.Halo 2.............................NOT!

HALO PC- Supports up to 16 people in aserver for multiplayer.Good graphics, and what I like to call a budget value game. It was made by microsoft so you know your getting good, and its only 20 bucks. Seriously though the campaign is like pretty long even at easy and no one can resist a challenge at legendary.

Not in the top FPS games IMO. The campaign was OK, but does anybody even play the multiplayer anymore?HALO PC- Supports up to 16 people in aserver for multiplayer.Good graphics, and what I like to call a budget value game. Only about 300-500 people assuming all filters are off except the "dedicated servers only" one.
