If you use spybot search and destroy, and ad-aware se; together they make the best free software package in my opinion.

The best free anti-spyware tools are online scanners offered by companies that sell anti-spyware software.

Even though the detection and removal rates have been in a steady decline for the past five or six years, the best downloadable anti-spyware tool is probably Ad-Aware.

The only thing Spybot is good for is cleaning out cookies. Considering it doesn't do a thorough job of that, it's all but useless. It's just another example of popular and free trumping effectiveness.

In reality, even the best anti-spyware utility isn't going to catch everything. You need to run two, three, even more different utilities to detect and remove everything. If you're really paranoid about spyware or have problems with it, buy one of the top anti-spyware utilites, download Ad-Aware, and run one of the online scanners regularly.
