hello everyone. i'm looking to buy a HDTV this week, and was wonering what would get me the most bang for my buck for around 600 bucks. it's primary purpose will be for playing my 360 and i haven't really found any solid info on whether LCD or plasma would be the best for gaming, or if there really is a big difference at all. i do have a 360 with an hdmi port if that makes any difference (i've heard there are 360's without one)

from the browsing i've done in stores, the screen on plasma's seems to be very susceptible to glare. i have MANY windows where i game, and nothing drives me more crazy than seeing their glare on my screen when im watching a movie or gaming.

i work at walmart, so have access to a 10% discount, so will most definitey be purchasing my television there.

any advice from someone with some knowledge on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Since you work for Walmart i would recommend a VW32L or VP322 both are vizio but there is no difference between vizio and the higher end brands like sony, samsung,lg. The VP322 is a plasma they have higher contrast ratios and deeper blacks than a lcd but plasma's are still prone to burn in caused by heavy gaming. Both T.V's are in your price range.

cool. thanks. i checked out some TV's at work today and thsoe vizio's caught my eye. and they are currently on rollback too. my only concern is still lcd/plasma. the burn-in worries me, and i again noticed the intense glare on the plasma over the LCD, which like i said, drives me crazy with all the windows around where i play.

I would go with the lcd because even with plasma having an edge with deeper blacks and higher contrast ratios because when you get a plasma you are required to do a 100-hour break in period.

Please stop the misinformation, most plasmas have anti-burnin caled pixel shifting. If not then stop buying the cheap brand like vizio.

Burnin is so 80s.

Please don't spread false information. The higher end brands are more for a reason.

False, watch documentary about where your products are made, most likely its made in China. There are factories in China that produce HDTVs for multiple brands such as Samsung, Phillips, Sony and other cilent. They basically just slap on the brand name infront of the HDTV and viola, its a Samsung, its a Vizio Etc. Check out Dell's Monitors, most of them are rebadged Samsung monitors for example. People on gamespot can be such idiots when it comes to the products they are purchasing.

There is a lot of economic behind why Vizio sells their HDTV for cheaper, maybe because consumers are attracted to lower prices.

thanks for the input everyone. i ended up spending a little overbudget and went with a 42'' vizio lcd.

i did have a few more questions since you ahve all been so helpful. the display when playing my xbox is amazing now, but my television (both regular and HD channels) look terrible. i am still connected on basic cable line (the kind that screws in, like with old school TV's). would this account for my low picture quality?

Depends on the monitor. Dell used LG Philips panels for some monitors, which were generally awesome. Samsung does make their own panels, but don't use very many in their own products. like with the 226BW that everybody loved, their S panel was the good Samsung one - otherwise they switch off to AU Optronics (VERY popular LCD panel maker, Chinese) or CMO (another chinese one)

Samsung makes their own panels. In fact they make panels for Sony as well. Soon Panasonic will me making plasma panels for Poineer. Last I heard Sharp will be producing LCD panels for Pioneer as well.

The chips used in these different models are the main thing seperating them. Sony uses their BRAVIA engine for example.

From what I understand Vizio buys older generations of LCD and Plasma technology therefore being able to both purchace and sell them for cheaper.

Remember, you get what you pay for.

offbrands use cheap parts that break down fast like vizio. Picture might be ok but service is another matter! Enjoy!

to bad you cant save up 500 more bucks.. you could get the tv i just got last spring. i have not had one single problem with it. even stanard cable looks good. which is rare with most hdtvs.
