I'm getting a new PC soon for my birthday, and I was looking to get Grand Theft Auto IV, Crysis and San Andreas. What's the best graphics card money can buy?

Or an nVidia GTX280. It runs cooler, quieter and is cheaper than the HD4870X2.

but i guess you can't know how much it hurt to know that my next pc build in 2010 will cost me PLENTY plenty more then the previous
just because how i saw 4870x2 go from 599$ in canada to 720$
it why i didn't wait for november to make my pc thx god i did it 1 month ago :D i saved huge money nto because ti was on sale. but because it was -30% expensive for every part

ATI's Radeon HD4870x2= overkill unless you're running on high resolutions. It's like a muscle car, a gass guzzler, hot and not all that agile. Meaning there are some games that don't fully utilize both GPUs, meaning it won't scale all that well. Not to mention some think ATI's drivers aren't as good as Nvidia's. Nvidia's GTX280. This bad boy used to 600+$ but due to hefty competition from ATI, dropped to 400$. Single GPU vid card, runs cooler, less problems with scaling and less power consumption. It all depends on what monitor you'd be using, the most powerful isn't always the best choice. And on a side note, San Andreas will be running ridiculously fast on those vid cards.

GTX 280. Runs every game fast and don't have to deal with hotfix/compatibility issues from ATI.

You can also get a XFX GTX260 Black Edition, it's faster than a stock GTX280 and much cheaper. It overclocks really well too.

While I use a GTX 260 Core 216 myself the TC straight up asked what is the best card money can buy. The answer remains the 4870X2.

I heard about a 1024 MB video card, which one is that? Forgive me if I sound stupid, but I usually just focus on the buying and playing of the games. I still would, but the ATI All-in-Wonder 7500 is starting to lose power.

That's just it, though. "Best" is a relative term, depending on what you're using the card for, and how you're using it. If he has an AGP motherboard, then the 4870X2 isn't automatically the best video card for him. If his PC runs incredibly hot and he lives in Death Valley, then the 4870X2 won't last very long. I can understand what you're saying, it is the most powerful, but I'd argue against it being the "overall best". :) Props on the GTX 260 by the way. Haha.

EDIT:

Chill, man - you're not stupid. :) The nVidia GTX280 has 1024MB of GDDR3 RAM, RAM specifically used for graphics processing. The ATI HD4870 has 512MB and 1024MB versions, and the HD4870X2 is exactly that - two HD4870s in one card, meaning it in effect has two graphics processors, and a mighty 2048MB of GDDR5 memory. However, memory isn't everything - it's usually the speed at which this memory runs that will greater effect the games you're playing.

Just some quick ones - what PC were you thinking of getting? Were you going to build it yourself? Is your motherboard gonna' be an SLI one or a CrossFireX one? (ie. nVidia chipset or Intel chipset? Or if it's X58 chipset, it has both!) What size monitor are you playing on? How much do you want to spend?

id take the 4870X2, also ATIs CCC(catylyst control center) is much better than nvidias control panel. for me thats be a deal breaker, i cant get the nvidia control panel settings to let me use my tv but CCC did it just fine and very easily. CCC is also much simpler to use and more compact

Well I dont know really as I own neither cards :P But still some games like hell's highway only uses one GPU, but that still means running on one 4870 which is plenty powerful. And this is from a recent article.

4870, less driver problems than the x2, quicker than you'll need.

Saying that, even the 4870 will be bottlenecked by a lot of CPU's. And the 4870, or 4850 is overkill for gaming at the moment really anywyay. Last series cards are still capabable of maxing everything.

Well, he can get the XFX GTX260 Black Edition for 300$ on newegg and that's only a bit more than a HD4870.

i would have to say go with the 4870x2 because for one it has 2 GPU's in it and 2 gigs of GDR5 in it, or you could always wait for the 5870x2's or Nvidia's new video cards coming out next year... but i guess is all on what you choose....everyone has there own taste... some people like the quality and feel of nvidia and some love ATI's .... i been using nvidia mostlty because of there great drivers...but im switching to ATI with my new pc build if nvidia can't come out with something to push back against ati's 4870x2's....

GTX 280 is better than the 4870x2, not in fps but it still is one powerful card. It also has better cooling, power consumption, and best of yet no microstuttering. People praise ATI now but if you were to stop and think about it, the past two gens it has taken Ati to put 2 gpus on one card to out perform Nvidia's flagship cards.

Personally I would go with the new 4850X2 from Sapphire, beat out the GTX280 with everything maxed and is much cooler and much quieter than the 4870X2 and its around the same price point as the GTX 280 and gives better performance

there is no microstutter when you crossfire 4800 cards. Since the 4870x2 is just crossfired 4870s on a single PCB, the same thing applies. That said, the 4870 is indeed the fastest card money can buy...specs wise and in a bunch of games too. But if you want a card that will 100% give you huge frames in every single game, then the GTX280 is the way to go. The 4870x2 is extremely fast, faster than the GTX280 in many games, but there are plenty of games where crossfire just does not work and you are stuck with a $480 card only using half its power. Please note that I have never owned an nVidia card, so I am no nVidia fanboy.
