Condemned - Criminal Origins
Horror at it's best.
Silent Hill 2 - Restless Dreams
It's one of the greatest horror games ever released on any platform, if not the best. Never thought horror games can be emotional as well.
Penumbra Overture
Freakin Scary!
Doom 3
People say it's repetative and it is, but it's scary regardless and hundred times better that F.E.A.R in terms of horor.
I've played more great horror games, but that's all I can remember right now.
I'd have to say System Shock 2. This game is amazing, and creepy as hell. The atmosphere is so intense, it's scary when nothing is going on.TheMotherBrain
Agreed.
Can you download System Shock 2 for free?Skullcraft
No. It is not abandonware as EA is still in business and could re-release it at any time. Although sadly, they will never.
Well, SS2 is on classicpcgames.com for a free download. Since it seems like a good website with a few thousand members, would it be illegal?Skullcraft
classicpcgames.com is a website where you can get LOTS of casual games. There are some exceptions of decent games like System Shock 2, but other than that, its mini games. You need points to get the games; you can write upa review for any needed games on their website (to ge the points).
Edit: Dont count on the site tho, I believe all the "decent games" are demos :P
System Shock 2. Freaky scary, especially if you use some mods on the game. Man, those sick sounds in that game....
Fear Expansion is scarier than original Fear imo, worth checking out both. Doom 3 made me jump some times, I played it coop on the Xbox, PC campaign all alone might be even scarier.
I did not find Undying especially scary, just boring and tedious. The game is not bad though, if they focused a little more on telling the story in a timely fashion and less on walking around aimlessly, it would be a great game.
Wolfenstein was a fun game, scary at times. Definitely a must play for every FPS-fan.
Cryostasis will hopefully be a great game.
System Shock 2
Thief (the first one)
Silent Hill 2-4
Return To Castle Wolfenstein(I found it scarry)
Doom 3
Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines(it has this kind of twisted atmosphere, like something isnt right but you dont know what...)
The marine campaign of Alien versus Predator 2
System Shock 2. So creepy!
Right now I am playing Thief the Dark Project because I heard there is a terrifying orphanage level of some sort. I have to check it out!
System shock 2
Doom 3 uses cheep spawn tricks to make you jump but they bloody well work and the atmosphere is amazing
the end of F.E.A.R. maybe just because of the ghosts that are coming at you
but for me STALKER takes the cake. going to the x17 labs and the reactors scaired me silly such atmosphere and terifying enemies and a story that gives it such a lucid reality that once id completed the x 17 lab mission i put the game away because it disturbed me a bit.
been meaning to pick it back up again, maybe tomorrow when it gets light
Condemed was pretty scary, the atmosphere of the run down buildings, and I remember there was a Mall level, and there was this hallway, naturally I walked forward with whatever weapon, but there was this manakin at the end of the hallway, I thought nothing of it, but when I reached the end of the hallway I saw some girl in a tattered dress run away from me, so my attention was focused on her, and all of a sudden, THE MANAKING SWINGS A PIECE OF REBAR WITH CONCRETE ON THE END OF IT AND CLOCKS ME IN THE FACE AND KILLS ME! That was probably one of the biggest "HOLY...moley" moments I've had in a video game since Doom 3.
oh, and that's just the tip of the iceberg for my condemned experiences, but the rest would be spoilers, and a big wall of text.
FEAR had less jumps and more of "ok...this is creeping me out" like when ALMA WAS IN AN ELEVATOR WITH YOU (freakiest split second I've encountered lol), or when you go into some room to listen to a phone message, you turn around and she's standing outside this window just staring at you, like she wants something.

You can purchase it from a seller on Ebay or Amazon for around 40-$50 for a good copy. It's worth every penny.

mrbojangles25
The orphanage level is actually in the third game, Thief: Deadly Shadows.
Still, The Dark Project is arguably the best and generally most creepy game in the series.
*Edit* Since nobody has mentioned it...Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth was great, too.
The PC version suffered a bit from consolisation, it has a few bugs and a few too many shooting sequences, but it's still an excellent horror game (although more of a Lovecraftian psychological/atmospheric horror, rather than a things-jump-out-at-you horror).

my bad I meant deadly shadows lol. And ya, I remember Dark Project being scary. Freaking zombies
Maybe she wants candy? hmm...Condemed was pretty scary, the atmosphere of the run down buildings, and I remember there was a Mall level, and there was this hallway, naturally I walked forward with whatever weapon, but there was this manakin at the end of the hallway, I thought nothing of it, but when I reached the end of the hallway I saw some girl in a tattered dress run away from me, so my attention was focused on her, and all of a sudden, THE MANAKING SWINGS A PIECE OF REBAR WITH CONCRETE ON THE END OF IT AND CLOCKS ME IN THE FACE AND KILLS ME! I haven't played too many scary games on the PC. The games below were about the only ones that had anything scary about them.
Doom 3 - Had some good make you jump point in it.
STALKER - The underground labs were great for keeping me on the edge of my seat.
Thief Deadly Shadows - The Shalebridge Cradle was intense the frist couple of times I played it.
Condemned - Criminal Origins
AvP
AvP 2
STALKER - has a creepy atmosphere.
The only games i've found to have realistic atmospheres where you might actually get a shiver down your spine.
Other games like FEAR and Doom3 i found rather lacking in the scare department.
System shock 2,Condemned,Undying,AvP2.Zillaschool
I have to add vampire the masquerade and Call of Cthulhu to that list.

and if what you mean by consolization is that the devs went bankrupt while porting Call of Cthulhu and abandoned the game leaving only a few devs working for nothing to get it on PC, resulting in a shoddy port... then you are absolutely correct
