Vostro 1320, I have the older 1310 model and I love it. It's 13.3 inches, has a nice lcd and I have an 8400mgs, in it. You will have an 9300mgs whcih is faster. You can put a really really fast cpu in it as well as 1-8 gigs of ram. I have 4. I also have a 9cell battery in it, and a 3945abg wireless card in it(good for backtrack 3, if you don't know what that is... google it :P) The newest Intel wireless cards can't don't have monitor mode drivers. As in they can't crack wireless networks. (only do this on your own for testing purposes :P)

Anyway, I love it, very powerful and small :D I run Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, runs like a dream...

Oh yeah make SURE you get a 7200rpm hard drive, so not get a 5400rpm one! Difference is massive.

a mac would be alright i guess but really trhere eyecandy laptops nothing more anything a mac can do a pc can do unless you are really into your os and doing things with it (servers, mass system updates, imaging, etc.) i highly recommend something in the $500 and under market possibly even a netbook (of which i high recommend the acer aspire one in the color of your choosing) because really if this is just for school work there no need for a dual/quad core cpu, 4GB ram and a gtx260m gpu

I take it you're going to use netbeans... in that case, get a decent laptop. You don't need anything that powerful, but I wouldn't get a netbook.

netbooks aren't as bad as some people on this forum say. They aren't really fast but with a ram upgrade they are perfect for school. Plus most of them can get 8hr+ battery life with wifi off ect.

Low budget (300 US$ or less): HP TC1100 Middle budget (600-800 US$): Dell Latitude XT High budget (1000+ US$): Fujitsu LifeBook T2020 Since you even considered a MacBook Pro, you could probably afford the T2020. I mostly recommended it because it has very long battery life. Also, any of these with Microsoft Office OneNote installed will be a student's best friend-specifically because they're all Tablet PCs, and OneNote really shines on those. You wouldn't want to bother with pen and paper anymore once you try it. The only potential issue is that Tablet PCs are relatively weak sauce for the money, especially regarding the GPUs used (mostly Intel crap), and these are no exceptions. But, if you're not doing anything like heavy gaming or video encoding on them, they should suffice.

Has anyone heard of Sager? I heard they make dell notebooks, and dell slaps the logo on. They are cheaper too.
