I am looking for a good medieval rts game basically. It doesn't HAVE to be rts, but I want a medieval game where I can bring more land under my control and of course with some fighting and things. Are there any recent medieval games that have come out? The last good one I played was Lords of the Realm 2. I have not tried Lords of the Realm 3 yet, but I might buy it. I also know of Stronghold Crusaders, which looks.....kind of bland graphically. And of course, Medieval II Total War, which has the best graphics imo, but there is no resource management or gaining and controlling of land as far as I know? I have seen Lionheart Kings Crusade as a recent one, but it's like Medieval II total war in that there looks to be no resource management or gaining of lands. There is a new game by Chris Sawyer called Kings and Castles, but it too looks like a set scenario that you play over and over again, and not one that can be different every time.

Mount and Blade: Warband. Grand strategy where you own fiefs, castles, cities, join a faction, become a noble, get married, start your own faction. Battles are played in first or third person with you leading an army, sieges, mounted combat, tournaments, it has everything. Play it.

You do gain lands and have to manage money in Medieval 2: Total War, which is the best one. I could also recommend the action RPG Mount&Blade Warband (you gain land and with mods there is some empire management as well) and maybe even the RTS Age of Empires 2 (You manage stuff and well you can build where you destroyed the enemy town.

You could also play civilization while it features all eras. You can start in the medieval era and set the settings so that you can also beat the game in the medieval era. Europa Universalis begins in the Medieval Era or Reneisance but ends in the industrial.

There's a mod called Deus Lo Vult which adds a lot more depth to the whole economic and resource area of the game as well as the diplomatic side, you can try that. Mount & Blade Warband is another good choice, though that's more from a first person perspective then a strategic.

I used to love Lords of the Realm 2 as well but I haven't played a game like that since. Medieval 2 does have a management section but it's on a much larger scale, more akin to Civilization, but on the other hand the combat is so good you should play it anyway. Stronghold Crusaders was a great game but way too old now, haven't played the newer ones but the reviews aren't that great. Settlers and Anno might be worth looking into as well.

Ok thanks for the recommendations guys. It looks like I will just have to try Medieval Total War II: Kingdoms then, because I actually owned it for a little bit, and the graphics and battles are sooo good that you can't really pass it up. However, I just wish there was a game with that kind of quality battles, but with a Lords of the Realm 2 resource/land management to it. I looked at the Settlers games briefly, and they look interesting, but I never saw the "battle" gameplay in those games, and I like battles with lots of men. Big armies, etc. Looks like MTW II kingdoms may be my only option right now :( I'm not saying it's a bad game, cuz it's awesome in one area, but poor in resource management, building your own castles, etc. The anno 12...whatever series I havn't researched much either. Eh, just can't find a recent game like Lords of the Realm II and it's frustrating lol.

By the way, I just bought Lord of the Realms III and I also just installed Lord of the Realms II for the first time in about 7 years lol. All I can say is WOW that after like 14 years of Lords of the Realm II being out, it still beats the pants off of some modern games. The gameplay on Lords of the Realm II is soooo much better than some modern day medieval games. It's truely amazing. Lords of the Realm III is terrible, as most people have been saying. There's only about 4 scenarios you can run through, and the "strategic" level (where you have parcels of land and a map) is probably the worst I've seen. I sat there for about an hour trying to figure out how to create armies lol. And the combat is worse than it's like 10 year predecessor. Just absolutely amazing how a very old game can beat the pants off of a much newer game. I'm shocked. Where are all the good medieval games? The quality of medieval games has gone down drastically I'm sorry to say :(

Settlers 7. Yes, it really is worth going through the Ubi**** DRM, it's a charming, brilliant game in its own right. Others have said M&B Warband - if you want something more combat focused as an RPG, that's great. Anno 1404 is nice if you want a game dedicated to economy play.

Does it HAVE to be recent? Coz Stronghold is still the best medieval themed game I've ever played. It's 2D and max resolution is 1024x768, but voice acting more than makes up for all that.

What are you talking about? there is no "god-awful" DRM... Medieval 2 TW, Anno 1404 and Settlers 7 are your best choices imo.

What are you talking about? there is no "god-awful" DRM...

According to Wikipedia, there is, at least in the digital versions:

A restrictive aspect of the game is its rigorous DRM system based on Tagès. It forces users to activate their game online once by submitting an activation code after each installation on a different computer or a significant hardware change. The activation can be performed on any PC with an internet connection. It can only be activated three times by default and unlike many other DRM systems it does not support revocation of already used licenses. Further licenses can be requested free of charge by contacting Ubisoft.

The copy protection has been completely removed with patch v1.1 for the DVD version. Digital download versions retain the copy protection.Wikipedia

Digital version, yes, don't know why they kept it like that, but fact remains, retail is "clean" after the patch. It's an amazing game, why would anyone want to miss it just because the digital version still has limitations from the DRM?

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but i'm looking for medieval NON- fantasy rpgs. the sort where u can do quests, manage property, and has swords n archery n stuff. M&B warband is good, but it has absolutely no land manging and building options. Any suggestions? Thanks.

M&B Warband does have that, you manage various cities/ villages and construct buildings in order to improve your village/city.

how long does it take to get to that phase? I've played that game for hours and the best I could do is get missions from royalty, order around my company of men (about 80 of them), and take on raiders and bandits.

Do you need reputation/prestige to get land to build on or something?

You don't get land to build on per say, but when you pledge allegiance a lord, you usually gain a fief (a village) to call your own, and whenever you go to that village from there on you can build upgrades like outposts. You can't physically see these structures in the village, but it certainly adds a degree of village management.

Basicly as soon you get a fief you also gain the ability to build stuff on it, the stuff you build cost a few thousand denars and a some days to complete dephending on what you are building. How much reknown do you have? If you have around 100-200 (cant remember the exact amount) you can go up to any King whose faction you would like to join. Ask him and he will give you the weakest fief in the empire, this fief you can build stuff on.

Also if you are the ruler of your own faction you can convert vassals of other factions or turn your companions into vassals and then give them fiefs. Also if you have the diplomacy mod you can add "civics" (like civ 4) to your empire with a slider determining how free your people are and a bunch of other stuff.

Mount & Blade games are some of the best out there right now and they also have a great and diverse mod community.

Play the Mount & Blade: Warband single player. When you get bored of that, get the cRPG mod. When you get bored of that, get Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword.

Medieval 2 total war is a great game! One of the best war games out there. As for Anno 1404, you should definitely buy that one!

Both games can be picked up from the bargain bin and are guaranteed to keep you out of bed for months.
