to be honest WOW is so popular and user friendly with a good amount of content and is very polished. Guild wars is free and fun. The rest of the mmorpg at the moment are not worth it.

Wait for Age of conan is my tip.

Actually I hopped onto EQ2 recently to try it out.. I found it to be very refreshing.. Granted it has no real pvp to speak of (that is why I play Guild Wars hehe).. I still found it to be much more challenging with way WAY better crafting system by far..

Top that off WoW is popular but that always does not make it the best, while most mmo's released in the time of WoW are just as polished and some do have more content.. Its a toss up really, WoW was great for me in the beginning but at the end game its a mindless grind fest.. People who claimed they quit because they just didn't have the time to raid shock me, you actually wanted all that time spamming a half dozen skills or less while listening to one person in the mic for hours, on mostly nonchallenging boring instances..  Hell some guilds have been perma banned from WoW becauase they exploited to cut corners in the raid instances JUST BECAUSE IT GO THAT BORING.

Not flaming you, but expect alot more of this and alot more often in EQ2

As for the OP, you pretty much have the top 2 games of that department (even though I personally don't like GW), nothing else comes close to the content/opions/accessability of wow and gw at the moment.

Wow, what and unbelievably subjective question.  You will never get a straight answer on this.  The majority of MMO players in the west play WoW and GW.  That doesnt mean they are the best.  Whats best for you of course wont be for me.  For instance I do not play WoW and you do.  It's a fine game, but after the beta I decided to go with other MMO's.  At some point I've belonged to just about all of the major and minor MMO's out there and I go back and forth between them on a regualr basis over the years.  After playing in the LoTR:O beta I've decided to get the life time account as I feel it's a worthwhile investment.  If your looking for a WoW type combat system but a little more heavy on the storyline front then I would suggest that you try it when it comes out or at least snatch a gamespot beta key for this weekend's stress test.  If your more into micromanagement and PVP based play then consider EVE Online.  This summer, EVE is getting a major graphics overhaul and with memberships on the rise, coupled with the unique learning system nobody will ever reach "max level" before the game is closed many years form now.  Vanguard is more or less the true sequil (in game play) to EQ1 and EQ2 is just a nice change of pace from all the other fantasy based MMO's out there.  Age of Conan is something I'm really looking forward to as Funcom has made good strides in the MMO field with AO and I'm sure that will translate into making a great Conan universe.  Reall the best way to find "the best" MMO is to try the free trials that most of them offer and then decided.  If they dont offer a trial, then go to a forum and ask specific questions about the game.

I've played 7 MMO's in various capacities, 3 for at least 6 months or more, and yeah, WoW is the best one, from what i've played. It's not the only game in town, CoH/V for example being a quality choice, but, yeah, WoW just has that special something that makes it unbeatable.Haven't tried LotR yet, DLin the stress test as we speak.

CoH/CoV are my current favorites, AoC looks really good and so does W:AoC. If you get the $20 SoE pass then you can play all SoE games for that much. I am liking V:SoH, MXO is ok, EQ I & II are both fun, SWG... not any more.

If you can get to 70 and get in a good raid guild in EQ2 it's the best game for raiding IMO. Not sure why someone said there's no PvP in it tho, they added new PvP servers a while back (maybe a year ago?).

Having played 10+ MMORPGs, I think WoW is the best one on the market for newbies.

Greatest of all time would probably be Asheron's Call 1, even though it didn't challenge EQ or WoW for most subscribers.

Most underrated has to be Anarchy Online but it's their fault for releasing such a crummy launch product.  People would have given it a chance and enjoyed what it is now if they had initially released a bigger, more stable product.

Just remember that you'll never be a good judge of MMORPGs after you play a few because no matter how addicted you are to the genre, you'll always view the first MMOGs as the best ones because there's only so many hours of leveling grind one can take if enough new concepts aren't added to the genre.
