Warcraft 3 has an excellent multiplayer. Might be hard for new people but there is loads of different custom maps to play. It's very popular also. Great for competetive playing. So pick Warcraft 3 if you want a good traditional rts mp. Battle.net is a major plus also.
Then for a different kind of rts mp experience there is World in conflict. Heavy focus on teamplay and explosive action make it stand out. No basebuilding, all teamwork and action. It has a great mp play. I really enjoy it. Wic has massgate which is like a mini battle.net, great for clans and such.
Those two are my favourite rts mp experiences.
I loved Company of Heroes multiplayer, although others may disagree. Also, World in Conflict is fun.ThePostalWorker
I was never a big fan of Dawn of War multiplayer, CoH was more fun IMO.
If you've never played good ol' War3, I'd recommend picking up the battle chest, it's classic. World in Conflict is also a stellar game, though the fact that there aren't may different units (there are about 12 total useful units) hurt it a bit for me.
Edit - What I mean by that is that all 3 sides basically have the same units. I've just been spoiled by War3/Dawn of War with the different, fun factions.
I would not recommend company of heroes , due to issues with OF. it really created alot of bugs, and issues with relic online. However the best MP i have played in years was CoH, as it really involed alot of smart tactical use of your units.
WiC is pretty fun, but unless your with friends/teammates, the MP gets pretty boring after awile. The main issue isnt the MP, its due to the fact that either you crush the opposing force,or you get crushed by them, due to your team.
