First off, I'm not much for mulitplayer. I enjoy co-op. If you're into that kind of thing, Call of Duty World at War has decent online (don't recommend the single player)as well as Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood, if your system can stillrun it (not exactly compatible with Vista).
For standard online, COD4 is pretty good. Half Life 2 and the various mods (Zombie Panic, Insurgency,etc) are still surprisingly active online.
Team Fortress 2. I would say CoD4, if it wasn't for the fact that skill in it is so hard to find since it virtually nonexistant. Also, TF2 just plain plays better.

Multiply the numbers by quite a few times and you get the number of PC gamers online in a certain game. The most active are, CS 1.6, CS Source, CoD 4, CoD WaW, Battlefield 2, L4D, TF 2.
there's just so many that there's really no clear cut winner....my instincts tell me to say Team Fortress 2, but my trigger finger tells me to say Counter Strike. It all comes down to personal preference really. Cartoony Class-Based old-school capture point (TF2), Hardcore no-respawn twitch gameplay (CS:S) or zombies (Left 4 Dead).
Team fortress 2,left 4 dead, and counter strike source(any cs really altough preapred to get owned alot in the begining play aim,fy,gg and dm servers to help speed up through the intial learning curb then move on to the real game.
ew, you people all said it was great and I was terribly dissapointed. Especially the training level, made me feel like a Kindegartener with all those directions @_@.
The most extreme experiences in online gaming are clan wars. And there is only one place to be for those: cs. I tried getting into cs 1.6 I wasn't good enough lolool in css its do-able though. It's pretty nice there too, but the gameplay is kinda wierd at times.
Quake Live and CS1.6. I haven't played TF2 or L4D for any extended periods so I can't say about those. However, I have played CoD4 and I wasn't sold. The gameplay is horrible, full of 'nade spam, campers, and spray-n'-pray. Learn how to cook grenades and you will have mastered the hardest aspect of that game, for tracing and twitch-aiming is not needed at all in this game. Both Quake Live and CS1.6, on the other hand, reward you based not on lucky you are in throwing your grenades and spraying, but rather how well you aim and how fast your reaction is. Yes CS1.6 is a little more on the camping side, but it isn't as bad as CoD4. In CS1.6, camping is an extremely n00b strategy and only works if you are playing against n00bs. A good player would be able to quickly turn and headshot any idiot who decides to camp before they can do too much damage. In CoD4, the scoreboard leaders are usually the players with MGs camping at a vantage point and calling down helicopters and airstrikes.
Counter Strike:Source its the only game i will play online.And for a good reason.

Counter Strike games piss me off. Team Fortress 2 is the best, hands down. No BS headshot detection, and a great class system.
Lol umm... I play both but comon, you want to talk about BS? I'd rather have a skilled player kill me with a headshot in CSS than some n00b spray me with a crit hit in TF2
