I am looking to get a new set of headphones for listening to games. I don't necessarily need a headset with a mic though could be useful if it did, I am more interested in just straight audio and getting the best sound for my money. I had a 5.1 sysetm before but had to sell it a while back so now I want headphones cos I can't afford another 5.1 setup. So what are your suggestions? I heard the Astro A40s are pretty good.

Also do I need anything else in my system like a sound card or anything like that or will it work in normal headphone jacks? I usually know a lot about audio but a noob when Audio meets PC :P

Budget?MonsieurX

I'm really trying to stay around 150-200 euro, but even that seems like a lot just for headphones. I can bid on a set of A40s on ebay for 140 Euro.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Maybe a sound card like a Xonar DG/DS/DX to amp them

Ok those headphones seemed great but I am getting a bit cheap now because I don't feel I will get enough out of them for the price and having to get a soundcard too etc.

So I have narrowed it down to 2 options because I can get them relatively cheap and I would like your opinion on them

The corsair Vengeance 1500 7.1 set at 78 euro

OR

Sennheiser PC 333D Headphones at 120 euro

Ultrasone hfi 580/dj1, because they sound awesome for electronic music, punchy bass, and decent soundstage for gaming. $120 for that, had a pro700mk2 that sounds similar to m50 I think which I sold.

You must get a xonar dg at least since realtek sounds like arse to me.

Get some good non-gaming branded headphones. Then get a clip on mic or an antlion mic

I went with the Corsair vengeance 1500s after. I got some good replies here and those Audio technika ones looked pretty sweet but in the end I couldn't justify the price of them. I wanted some decent sound but at a price I found good and my corsair ones only cost like 70 euro so I couldn't say no.

They will do what I need to do. thanks for the replies though guys

Fellow Headphone enthusiasts, we have failed this day.

Let it be known that on the tenth day of July in the year 2012, we - the denizens of the Audio Video forums of Gamespot - let down a fellow gaming enthusiast by failing to properly demonstrate the superior performance, value, and benefits of a reputable audio brand to that of a gaming brand, diluting our message with recommendations for a sound card and alternate brand when the Audio Technica ATH-M50 was so close. The result is a user purchasing a Corsair headset - CORSAIR - over an Audio Technica headphone. Blame not the user, for it is us - his peers - that have failed.

We now don the cone of shame.

Hi .

All is not lost if you are still considering Surround. check the Roccat Kave true 5.1 surround headset I have it and its brilliant. you need a 5.1 sound card on your pc though.

Cheers

 well this turned out to be hilarious in the end :P

But now I feel bad for ordering what I did :?

I was a bit eager and naive and the price was cheap so I dove. Kinda regret it now after seeing what Boz wrote :(

Don't even open it: Return it and get something better for less money. Do it now!
