Yeah gday mate I love my RTS so here are a few of my favs

Age of empires  2

Rome Total War or Medieval 2

Starwars Empire at War

Warcraft series

personally AOE2 is my all time fav but the other 3 are good. then there are the command and conquer series which i didnt get into but many love. Your best pick are the ones mentioned (again this is just my view)

Company of Heroes is awesome, but you need a fairly good system to play it maxed out.

I like Rome total war a lot. I play it all the time, great game and it's very impressive to have so many soldiers slashing on the battlefield. Gameplay is superb and there's a lot of depth in the game too. You can choose whether you wanna micromanage your empire, only play field battles or do both at the same time. Best one I've ever played.

As for the strategy, the game is really realistic. History is a hobby of mine and I really can imagine these battles took place in a similair kind of way as you can see in Rome total war. The line up is very essential as well as the coordination of your troups. It really feels like playing large field battles.

I have to note I don't have medieval total war. My guess is, it will be even more impressive than Rome.

If you are looking for a newer game I would go with Medieval 2: Total War, or Company of Heroes.

An older rts that is still one of my favorites would be Rise of Nations.
