Been looking for a RTS game, other than Starcraft because that doesn't interest me, that has a large online community. I would prefer it would be not futuristic like starcraft.

This, except DoW 1, they're friendly there if they see your score is bad they'll kindly ask you to find another game and play more till you reach their level of experience. All rts games are unfriendly to new player, at least in the multiplayer.

Nobody plays TW games online tho, you'll find a few occasional games going on but in general the multiplayer is dead, also DoW 2 has a bad community :P well not bad, but as any other RTS, though there are decent, relaxed, fun people playing last stand.according to steam stats, empire total war and napoleon total war have pretty big communities, also dawn of war 2
BF0
StarCraft 2 has it setup so newbies like me can learn how to play the game in the practice league. Neat idea honestly. All rts games are unfriendly to new player, at least in the multiplayer.

Company of heroes has a terrible community. Very unfriendly to new players.

I agree 100%. Those guys will destroy you, then rub it in your face on how much better than you they are...
Completely agree, it's pretty horrible, the few people I know who were involved in the community, from GS and locally were better than the rest admittedly.Otherwise TC there is Supreme Commander, the first seems to still have a dedicated community after the second went in the 'streamlined' direction. But the competition would be uneven. Same with others like DoW2.
Which is why I almost never play RTS multiplayer with anyone other than friends.
One major exception being World in Conflict.
As it is team based, and has an easier learning curve, as well as less of a risk in making bad decisions, it is remarkably fun to play casually.

Btw the other guy is kinda right with supreme commander, forged alliance have 350 players on avarage so there is some waiting between rank games, supcom2 has completely dead rank
Any idea how is Soulstorm doing?
Any players on rome total war?
What about fallout tactics? (I played it years ago on gamespy, maybe steam helped it)
Yeah it is dead... Me and my friend play games with just the two of us against computers and when I go to create the game, there are usually like 4 others games on the list and they all have passwords... I rarely see open games and have never seen more than 10 games at once... This is on Napoleon TW by the way...
this.:)That would be Warcraft 3. Can't think of any other non-futuristic games with big communities :P

what happened to Supreme Commander 2 online?gam3r3OOOI think most Supreme Commander fans would rather forget that game existed.
Really depends,
Coh, there are something like 3 smaller communities all together, two of them are really nice, but the Third is a pain int the backside.
The comper stompers, are all some of the most relaxed people in the world, the only real people that takes cooperative gaming as the norm it seems (does help that all human players are on the same team, youll find alot of new people here, while learning the game, and eally are the nicest of the bunch since they seem to be less formal and less aggrivated.
The 2nd are the auto matchers, Since the plyer do not pick what match to play but rely on luck to end up in any match, they too see to be more relaxed.
The largest Group are the normal matchers, stat wh*res, and arrogant sobs who are not even worth wasting time or having a conversation with, in all honesty, thier stats being the drivingforce behind them, they are most unkind if there is but the slightest chance of a loss.
DoW1,What is left of this community is pretty good, but is disqualified since there may be a few hundred people online at a time, they are usually funlowing Warhammer fans, that likes a good laugh, and since stats are far less important here, they care far less.
Sup Com1: Been a while since Ive seen this game online so I am not aware how many people still play, however the community is quite good, due to the more special nature of the game, there are plenty of room to chat ingame, and if soemone isnew, most will offer up advices andpotential buildorders, aswell as make you learn how to read the map. But It has been some timesince I playied (nearly a year, so it may have changed)
SC2: Not as great a community as you would like to think, I think it will evolve into a state not unlike CoH, as long as persistant stats are included, and detailed, a loss is unacceptable for some people (usually they make up for a portion of those rude persons), So here at the start where everyone is more or less even, it is ok, later on I doubt it will be. Luckily Battlenet is made with some skill on Blizzards behalf, so the deviding players on skill levels, might make it turn out so those really competetive people, and those who just plays for fun, will never see eachother, they would be in different ladders, anddivisions, so seperated, unlike most other games, I think that is a pretty important key part.
I would say the best community would be Company of Heroes; its active and easy to find a game and I think next to SC and WC3 it is the most populated. In all my years of playing RTS games I have never encountered a friendly community; alot of them are douche's and like to flex their epeen. However there are some good people out there. TW is dead online btw and its pretty hard to find a game in DOW2 sometimes.
C&C 3 tiberium Wars has a pretty large online community..
Though most usually just Scrin Rush.
Out of all the games I have played in the past 20+ years, I will say this, The more hardcore players online, are on RTS games, RTS games are probably the most unforgiving, non-new player friendly online communities their are. It will take you longer to get to the online players level on an RTS game (any) than it will on lets say a first or third person shooter!
I would say SC2 simply because at this time, there are more people in your situation that are playing this game online right now, SC2 has more newer players online than any other RTS out there period.
