I'm going to have to go with Warhammer 40k due to the "dark" feeling.(not washed out brown colors, swear words, and tons of gore). The entire universe is deviod of a steryeotypical "good" faction. Each race has it's own motivations and are arguably selfish. The "evil" faction (the chaos) propensity for evil is much much darker and well thought out than other "evil" races in games such as the covenant. Thoughts?

Blade Runner. I think Ridley Scott makes all his sifi movies in the same world, after seeing Blade runner than watching Alien they could be based in the same universe.

Eclipse Phase. The setting for this table top RPG is the best I've seen anywhere. It's a transhuman setting of conspiracy and horror. But it's not all grim dark, it's subtle in that respect. Despite all the technology transhumanity has at their disposal (they don't call themselves humans anymore) like mind uploading, AGIs, nano fabricators, the ability to inhabit a new body like changing a pair of pants and so forth, transhumans realize that the universe is ancient and holds many secrets and dangers. Best of all, it's licensed under the creative commons licensing and it's legal to download for free. One of the writers even hosts links to all the books. http://robboyle.wordpress.com/eclipse-phase-pdfs/

I think Dune is pretty cool. The story of the book wasn't that great, but the world seemed really interesting.

for me it's definitely the Fallout overworld, i also liked the universe the Culture novels are set in but i preferred Fallouts for its darker tones.

I agree with this. The Dune universe is excellent and very different to most other Scifi settings

Warhammer 40k.. No where have I come across such a immense universe where evil seemed well like evil.. And that settings can be so radically different.. The Space Wolves Omnibus for instance starts out as if your reading a Norse fable in which the main character gets their village raided by a opposing tribe.. Eisenhorn comes off as a detective thriller, in which the main character in the first books is attempting to track down and kill a man he has been hunting for 6 years.. Then you have the entire Horus Heresy series which to me feels like modern day Greek Mythology in a sense to the universe in explaining largely how things came to be... I can only hope there are more games, and some day a movie done in this universe..

In terms of games I'd say the Warhammer 40k universe, I would have said Star Wars but I'm more than a little burnt out on Star Wars in general. In terms of otherwise it would be Warhammer 40k again but also Dune and Star Trek. It's a shame there just haven't been many decent Star Trek games and only a couple of decent Dune games.

Thre's a lot of sci-fi universes with huge potential for videogames, but so far to date I think that the most successful ones were EVE Online -an original franchise- and the Warhammer 40.000 universe. For an already stablished franchise I think that variety and lore are the main requirements to enhance the potential of a sci-fi videogame, and in both terms I think that WH 40K excels. I didn't even play a WH match, but I bought a lot of codex and artwork albums just for the lore.

Terminator had robots, hovering machines, and naked people appearing all over. Worth mentioning. I guess I'd go with Deus Ex. A universe where every rumor is secretly true, technology is dominating mankind, and there's always someone out to get you. It's like an X-Files, 2001, Blade Runner sandwich.

How? In the Blade Runner Universe artificial human beings were made a lot earlier then in the Prometheus/Alien Universe. Tech is also more advanced in BR, despite the chronology.

I love a lot of sci fi universes, including many listed here.

Dead Space is quite a newly created universe with a lot of backstory seen in the movie and comics and how they link with the game. I think they have invented an interesting lore with for example unitology. There is a lot going on behind the scenes they can slowly tap into.

It's hard to go past the Mass Effect series in terms of gaming. Not only does it have a huge codex of information but it feels like a labour of love when it comes to races and how they intermingle. It's very distinctive being in that universe. In terms of games and movies

I think Star Trek is probably leading all comers. So much depth across the series and games.

edit: damn this thread is a few months old

I would argue there is a vague connection but the fact of the matter is Bladerunner was based off the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

I always thought the Tiberium Universe had a lot of potential but they never really did anything with it after Tiberian Sun. C&C 3 literally took back everything Tiberian Sun did. Allt he cool units were gone and instead we had a newer Tiberian Dawn, which is good, but no progress was made to the universe.

Star Trek and Star Wars are unarguably the greatest pieces concerning sci fi, ever created, in any medium. But my personal favorites would be Blade Runner, Dune and the Fallout games.

Heavily inspired but untimately went its own way. Still doesn't deter from the fact that Scott himself confirmed the films to be in the same universe
