ok so i am in a bit of a predicament here. i have about 620 dollars. i just ordered a 8800gts 640mb card from newegg on friday, i was planing on getting to go with that vista premium and 3 gigs of ddr2 800 ram. but it has recently come to my attention that i could change and cancel my 8800 order and get a 2900xt 1 gig no vista and one more gig of ddr2 667 ram to go with my current ram... this is really hard for me to decide because i am not really sure which is better in the long run. which would you do and why? thanks...

I would upgrade to 2GB, upgrade the PSU and maybe get a new monitor. I don't feel Vista is ready for prime time just yet.

wait. sorry i should change my sig. i currently have a ati 1900gt. like i said before i havent gotten the 8800 yet. do you think i should keep the 8800gts and the 3 gigs of 800 ram or should i get only one more gig of ddr ram and get rid of vista in favor of a better graphics card. and if so what do you think is the best choice.

I think the more ram route would be best.

Well the 2900xt is a better card and the drivers keep getting better and better. What resolutions are you playing at, because the 1GB version probably isn't necessary. If you get 3GB of ram you won't be able to run in dual channel, like you could otherwise. I would get the 2900xt and the 2GB of 667 ram(the slower speed won't make too large of a difference). Also the extra GB of ram won't help you in games atm.

what about the 8800gtx(msi is only 500)? also i am running at 1280x1050. i know its overkill but i want this thing future proofed for all of eternity. (or till past crysis) but now i have to check what powersupply i have to make sure it can support a gtx.

It's overkill why waste money? 8600GTS is fine. Maybe get a Raptor HDD. Here is the PSU hierarchy Class 1: These are the Best: PC Power & Cooling (All Turbo Cool & ULTRA-QUIET SILENCER 610W & 750W), Seasonic (S-12, S-12E+, M-12), Corsair, Silverstone (Zeus models ST56ZF, ST75ZF, and ST85ZF), Etasis & Zippy. Class 2: Antec, Enermax, Enhance, Fortron (FSP), Hiper (Type-M 670W & 730W & Type-R 730W) I-Star, OCZ Technology, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, Silverstone, Sparkle, Tagan, Thermaltake ToughPower (Only the ToughPower Line!), Vantec & XCilo. Class 3: Hiper (Type-R 580W, 530W & 480W) Mushkin & Sunbeam NUUO

so my two choices right now as of this moment are 1 gig or ddr2 675 ram, and a 8800gtx. or i could get a 8800gts 640mb, vista, and three gigs of ddr2 800 ram. both cost roughly the same. does it pay to get the gtx and future proof my self for longer. or is it more sensible to get the lower gpu and get better ram and vista? in otherwords what would you do.... i dont want to have any trouble running crysis on high.

I would get a 2900xt and 2 gigs of 667 ram, then wait till later to go to vista. Like I said earlier :P

do you think the 2900xt will have just as good a chance at running crysis on the highest it will go as a 8800 gts?

Why not just chill and wait for Crysis to come out before you buy something. Remember for an 8800GTX you need a PSU wit 2 6pin connectors and the same for 2900XT.

i sorta have to buy this something very soon. also my powersupply has 2 6 pin connecters on it. so iv narrowed it down to keeping my 8800 gts or canceling and getting a good 2900xt. what would you do?

Keep the GTS, upgrade the RAM, forget Vista and save for a new monitor.

Maybe because it's the fastest DX9 card.
