Warcraft 3 : Reign of Chaos, Warcraft 3 : The Frozen Throne, Max Payne, Max Payne 2 : The Fall of Max Payne, Hitman 2 : Silent Assassin, Hitman : Blood Money, Mafia, Far Cry, Doom 3, Half Life, The Longest Journey, Dreamfall : The Longest Journey.
Not only did these games have awesome single player campaigns (which is still go back and play through every few years) and skirmish, modem games of these against friends were a lot of fun.
Age of Mythology and it's expansion also had great single player campaigns.
The MOH and COD series single player campaigns are awesome, very intense and just get better as time goes on.
By best single player campaign, I'd take that as a combination of best story and gameplay. My top 5 in no particular order since I can't decide between any of them are:
Deus Ex
System Shock 2
Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate 2
and Metroid Prime (not as strong story wise as the above 4, but the gameplay is sublime)
Here is my list of best SP and stuff C&C series Chronicles Of Riddick Oblivion (just being a fanboy) Morrowind Bioshock (cant really say as its not out yet but it will be soon and it looks great) COD 1 Diablo 2 and LOD FEAR had a pretty strong story And the usual, HL2 etc, CoH, Warcraft iii and TFT, and of course Far Cry and Who could forget DOOM? - whats better than a portal to hell opening up and monsters coming out of it eating everyone lol Duke 3d (cant even remember the story but it was by far one of the funniest and cool games i have ever played.)
