Best site (free of viruses) for game demo's as well as patches

Any ideas? I'm sorta new to PC gaming and watch to test my rig against some graphics pushing games.

Yes Steam games are exactly the same, just in a different directory...

Instead of it being in like C/Program Files/Game by default it will be C/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/Game and you edit things from that directory exactly the same...

Steam would definitely be your best choice.
