Chronicles of Riddick is excellent.

Far Cry still holds up well.

Crysis is decent.

Max Payne 2 still holds up VERY well.

Doom 3 is OK.

STALKER, HL:2, COD:4, Prey, Quake 4 all suck.

I'd get the orange box.

If you haven't played HL2 or Ep1, you'll get a good 20+ hrs out of it if I remember it's length correctly.

I'd highly recommend STALKER, it's a great game that you can play for days on end.

Sorry the best single player game isn't up to date. And if youare playing a game strictly for graphics thats idiotic.

Get The Witcher, but the graphics might turn you off if you're looking for eye-candy. The graphics are not bad at all. They're just not up there with COD4 or Crysis. The great story is what kept me playing.

Never heard of any Mist game, but it is the sequel to the very similarly titled Myst. ;)

For me, the Golden Age of single-player games ended sometime after Planescape: Torment was released. So, you're going to be looking for older games.

  • Ultima VII: The Black Gate
  • Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom
  • Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
  • Gabriel Knight 1: Sins of the Father
  • Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within
  • Fallout 1 and 2
  • Deus Ex
  • Thief 1 and 2
  • Homeworld 1 and 2
  • System Shock 2
  • Dungeon Keeper 2
  • Longbow 1 and 2
  • Privateer
  • Grim Fandango
  • The Longest Journey
  • Any of the "... Quest" games from Sierra

Just to name a few...

Three games I recommend most highly as single player experiences:

System Shock 2: A science fiction roleplaying first person shooter horror masterpiece. Genius.

Escape from Butcher Bay: Excellent combination of shooter, stealther and adventurerer. Extremely well told story, cinematic feel and production values.

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines: A magnificent roleplaying game where everything you can do defers to the actual roleplaying. Dialogue, combat, questing... it's a true roleplaying game.

You like these three games, I like you.

Oh! And how could I forget Psychonauts? This game (combined with Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey) are proof-positive that video games transcend mere pop-entertainment and have achieved the status of art.

If you want a really long amout of gameplay from just two games, get oblivion and stalker. if you want a short burst of adreniline, get cod4 and crysis. or bioshock. or World in Conflict, that was pretty good, and it has skirmishes. whatever.

Stalker, if you mainly follow the main quest, is about 30hrs, but if you play like me, and wander around and do side quests, it probably takes about 50 per time through, and this game has amazing replayability. i got it when it first comes out, and i'm on my third time through. it's still greatly enjoyable

Most of the greats have already been posted. I know Morrowind isn't "up to date", but it's still a great game and you can find it for around $10. With mods, it could last you ages. It's successor, Oblivion, is also worth playing ($40 for GOTY). I know a lot of people prefer Morrowind over Oblivion, and perhaps for good reason, but I personally am having a great time playing through Oblivion right now. Oblivion also has a fantastic mod community.

The best single player games are years old. Take Planescape: Torment for example, the best singleplayer experience you'll find, yet it was made in 1999.

Riven, the game I suggested, is over ten years old, yet it most certainly does not look like crap. As far as visual complexity, its graphics are still beyond even what Crysis can offer.

I agree with Rottenberry. The BEST games ever were made years ago, but you could try only the newer ones. Browse "gamespot" and you can choose what YOU really like.

Although I am always looking for games with good stories, I just felt that Call of Cthulhu's horrible gameplay and overall presentation dramatically reduced the game's overall experience to a very mediocre one. I mean, there were times in that game where I was really trying to take the game seriously, but many of the enemy voice actors would make me burst out laughing.

If you're all about graphics, then you won't like any of the following titles since they look dated, nevermind the fact that their gameplay kicks the crap out of the majority of new games: -Outcast -Fallout 1 and 2 -Magic Carpet 2 (better have DOSBox handy for this one) -System Shock 2 (the first game is also good, but the interface is weird by modern FPS standards) -Deus Ex (Stick to the original, not that Invisible War crap.) -Star Control II (freeware) Only seven or eight games, you ask? I could have listed many more, but now we'd be going back into 1980s territory.

Aye, Deus Ex 2: Invisible War was atrocious, and a disgrace to the series. Let's hope Deus Ex 3 can follow the footsteps of Deus Ex 1.

LOL agreed completely. I tried long and hard to come up with a worse and more wrong opinion than "HL:2 sucks", but I really can't. That's the most ridiculous opinion I've ever heard. That being said - I would recommend the original Half-life and its expansions if you have not yet played them. They are easily as good as, if not better than HL2. Outside of that - FEAR - pretty decent (though not outstanding) Far Cry - same No One Lives Forever - great, and funny to boot Stubbs the Zombie - entertaining for its campiness, and cheap Psychonauts - one of the best games I've played in recent memory. Outstanding. COD 1 & 2 - if you haven't played them, they're both classics Medal of Honor + Expansions - same American McGee's Alice - extremely twisted and disturbing. A lot of fun XIII - unique looking, decently fun So there's a list of things to consider that I enjoyed playing.
